This has been an unusually wet May in the D.C. region, conditions that are expected to linger through the month’s final days.

In her latest forecast for FFXnow, DC News Now meteorologist Jackie Layer advises Fairfax County residents “to stay weather-aware” tomorrow (Friday), as storms could potentially swing through the area in the afternoon and evening.

“Some of these could be on the strong to severe side, with the main threat being gusty winds,” Layer said. “Hail is possible too.”

The rain could initially ease on Saturday (May 31) before another system brings a chance of showers later in the day.

Depending on how much rain falls over the next couple of days, this May could wind up being one of the 10 wettest on record for the D.C. area, according to the Capital Weather Gang. All the precipitation has eased the drought that has persisted in the region since last summer, though most of Fairfax remains “abnormally dry,” per the U.S. Drought Monitor’s latest data.
