MetroFest to celebrate transit at Vienna station this weekend

Metro’s summer celebration will be held in Vienna this weekend.

Transit fans of all ages can indulge in a variety of WMATA-themed activities at MetroFest on Saturday (July 26), providing them a behind-the-scenes look at the D.C. region’s largest public transportation provider.

Attendees will be able to meet Metro staff, explore various Metro vehicles and ask questions about the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s processes, among other activities.

“This event gives us a fun, meaningful way to connect with our community,” WMATA General Manager Randy Clarke said. “It’s a chance to meet the incredible team behind the system, get up close with our vehicles and equipment, and celebrate what Metro means to the region.”

The “family-friendly celebration” will also feature music, snacks, exhibits and “photo-worthy moments,” WMATA said.

The event, which runs from noon to 3 p.m., will be held at the Vienna Metro station at the western end of the Orange Line. Though it is free to attend, submitting an RSVP is encouraged.

Looking to boost the transit system’s ridership and reputation following the pandemic as well as years of service and safety challenges, WMATA introduced MetroFest last year with a celebration at the Franconia station to kick off a summer of community events. The agency also hosted a series of concerts at its McLean Metro station.

So far, Metro’s efforts to improve safety and better engage the community appear to be having a positive effect. In a poll conducted this spring by the Washington Post and George Mason University’s Schar School, riders gave the system generally high marks overall and for reliability, value and safety from crime.
