Traffic Alert: Paving work closes lanes on Old Dominion Drive in McLean

Commuters might want to think twice before braving Old Dominion Drive in McLean this afternoon (Thursday).

The road is undergoing paving work today, requiring alternating lane closures for both west and eastbound traffic from Briar Ridge Road near the Chesterbrook Shopping Center past Little Falls Road in Arlington County.

The road work began around 7 a.m. and is scheduled to continue until 7 p.m., according to the Virginia Department of Transportation’s traffic cameras. It’s unclear whether the paving activities will continue tomorrow.

“I am not sure what stage they are in (marking eradication, milling, paving, restriping), but they usually happen in phases as subcontractors have to schedule as well as working around weather,” VDOT Northern Virginia spokesperson Ellen Kamilakis said by email.

According to Kamilakis, the paving work on Old Dominion is part of VDOT’s annual paving program, which receives around $100 million every year to resurface hundreds of miles of streets throughout the state.

Per VDOT’s paving map, work is also in progress on Dolley Madison Blvd (Route 123) from Anderson Road to Great Falls Street in Tysons, with plans to extend the asphalt resurfacing west to Leesburg Pike (Route 7) later this year.

VDOT held several meetings on its planned repaving and restriping projects in Fairfax County for 2025 in the spring. Some of the more notable planned changes included:

  • A road diet on Metrotech Drive in Chantilly (Sully District)
  • A bicycle lane on Dellwood Drive in Vienna (Hunter Mill)
  • New crosswalks on Wainwright Road at North Shore Drive in Reston and Mustang Drive at Mountain View Court in Floris (Hunter Mill)
  • Crosswalks and bicycle lanes on Vantage Drive, Bedrock Road, Rolling Stone Way and Kingstowne Commons Drive in the Franconia District
  • Road diet on Piney Branch Road in the Fair Lakes area from West Ox Road to Route 29 (Springfield District)

VDOT also completed a major traffic shift this morning on the Capital Beltway (I-495) in McLean, moving drivers to realigned southbound lanes so crews can work on new express lanes slated to open later this year as part of the 495 NEXT project.
