This autumn will be busy for the Fairfax County Parks Authority (FCPA).
Plans to install pickleball courts at Greenbriar Park near Fair Lakes and a skate park at Mount Vernon Woods Park in Hybla Valley will move forward in the coming weeks, the park authority announced yesterday (Thursday).
Beginning in “late August,” the Greenbriar Park project will replace a portion of a parking lot with five dedicated pickleball courts — up from the three that were previously proposed.
“As pickleball continues to grow in popularity across Fairfax County, the Park Authority is committed to enhancing recreational offerings, and this addition will create more opportunities for recreation, friendly competition and community play,” the FCPA said.
The addition of the new courts at Greenbriar Park (4600 Stringfellow Road) hops onto a growing trend across the county, which has seen new pickleball facilities sprout up in Chantilly, Tysons and other neighborhoods. Plans are also being developed to add new pickleball courts at Mason District Park in Annandale.
The Greenbriar Park renovation, which will have no impact on the rest of the park’s amenities, is expected to be completed later this year.
In September, the second phase of renovations at Mount Vernon Woods Park (4014 Fielding Street) in Woodlawn is scheduled to begin, highlighted by the addition of a new skating facility.
Spohn Ranch — a California-based company that has designed skate parks from Los Angeles to Leesburg, Virginia — is leading the project after gathering public input to ensure that the new space “reflects the needs and interests” of the local skating community, according to the park authority.
“Mount Vernon Woods Park has already become a vibrant community hub, and the addition of a skate park will make it an even more dynamic destination for residents of all ages,” FCPA Executive Director Jai Cole said in a press release. “We’re grateful to the community members who shared their input and helped us shape this exciting new feature.”
The skate park is scheduled to be completed this winter, according to county officials.
The first phase of renovating Mount Vernon Woods Park added a new playground, fitness area, multisport court, soccer field, picnic shelter and parking lot. Construction began last summer and finished in early 2025.
