Hybla Valley fire station to be redeveloped with emergency shelter and housing

Fairfax County could be moving forward soon with the rezoning of the outdated Penn Daw Fire Station.

The plan is to replace the current facility off Route 1 at 2801 Beacon Hill Road with a new mix of fire station, emergency shelter and supportive housing.

According to the rezoning application, the plan is for the new Penn Daw Fire Station, Shelter and Supportive Housing to replace the current building. The new fire station will be built adjacent to the current building, allowing the fire department to continue using the current Penn Daw Fire Station, with the redevelopment of that building starting once the fire department has moved into the new fire station.

The project’s statement of justification said:

The proposed uses for the property are a five-bay fire station, an emergency shelter and supportive housing. The shelter will have a total of fifty beds and an additional seven beds in the Exam / Medical Room. The supportive housing will have twenty single-occupant units and ten family supportive housing units.

The project description said it’s part of an effort to increase density along the Richmond Highway corridor.

“The proposed development provides a design that transitions from a higher density of a 3-story shelter and supportive housing along Richmond Highway, to a lower density of a 2-story fire station respecting the scale of the adjacent residential communities,” the statement of justification said.

There’s no date yet on the project website for when construction is expected to start. County staff previously hoped to start construction in 2024.
