Police are investigating the death of a man who experienced health issues after getting arrested for a crash in Fairfax City over the weekend.
Officers responded around 8:05 p.m. on Sunday (Dec. 14) for a single-vehicle crash at the Shell gas station at 11201 Fairfax Blvd. The 66-year-old driver was believed to have been under the influence of alcohol based on a preliminary investigation, the City of Fairfax Police Department says.
“Fire and Rescue personnel arrived at the scene and evaluated the man, who refused any further medical treatment,” the police department said.
The man was arrested and transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, where police obtained a warrant charging him with driving under the influence of alcohol.
However, while in jail, the man said he was “feeling ill.” He was taken to a local hospital, where “it was discovered he was suffering a medical emergency,” police said.
“Life-saving measures were taken; however the man later died at the hospital,” Fairfax City police said yesterday (Monday) in a news release.
The incident is being investigated by the Northern Virginia Critical Incident Response Team, which consists of participating law enforcement agencies from around the region and can be brought in to provide a more independent review of use-of-force cases, in-custody deaths and other incidents involving police officers.
According to Fairfax City police, the cause and manner of the man’s death will be determined by an autopsy. Any findings from the investigation will be presented to the Fairfax County Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney, which is responsible for pressing any charges.
“At this time, the man’s identity is being withheld due to the active investigation,” Fairfax City police said. “On behalf of the department, we extend our deepest condolences to the family during this difficult time.”
