An Alexandria man was killed this morning (Wednesday) in a crash on I-66 that left his vehicle totaled.
Nurelen Befekadu, 35, was driving on the westbound I-66 ramp to Route 28 (Sully Road) in Centreville around 5:36 a.m. when he lost control of his vehicle and hit a sound wall, according to the Virginia State Police.
“The preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle was travelling too fast for the ramp,” the VSP said this afternoon in a press release.
Befekadu was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Police didn’t describe the vehicle, but a dispatcher told Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department responders that it was a black Hyundai SUV, according to scanner traffic.
“The crash remains under investigation,” state police said.
Including Befekadu, Fairfax County has seen four people die in crashes so far this year, including two pedestrians and another driver who lost control while possibly speeding on Fairfax County Parkway in Burke.
