A child in McLean is safe and sound after getting caught in a culvert while playing in the snow this afternoon (Monday), the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department (FCFRD) says.
Firefighters responded to the 1900 block of MacArthur Drive around 4:45 p.m. after receiving reports of a trapped child.
“The child had been playing when they became stuck in the snow above the culvert,” the FCFRD said.
A firefighter identified the child as an 8-year-old boy, stating that he was “in pretty good condition” and able to communicate with the responders, according to scanner traffic.
Crews were soon able to free the child, who didn’t suffer any injuries and was “released to his mother.”
Man dies after shoveling snow
However, Winter Storm Fern has claimed at least one casualty.
As first reported by the Washington Post, a man in his 70s died yesterday (Sunday) after reportedly collapsing while clearing snow yesterday.
According to the Fairfax County Police Department, officers responded to the 9700 block of Banting Drive in Kings Park West shortly after 2:30 p.m. for a call of a CPR in progress.
“The caller stated that a male in his 70s was clearing snow outside when he collapsed,” the FCPD said.
The man was transported to a local hospital, where he was ultimately pronounced dead.
Winter Storm Fern arrived in Fairfax County late Saturday night (Jan. 24) and delivered up to 8.5 inches of snow and sleet through Sunday. While the snowfall amount wasn’t record-breaking, much of the precipitation froze overnight, making it harder to shovel.
Fairfax County shared safety tips for shoveling snow, warning against overexertion, especially for anyone with a history of heart issues:
- If you or someone you are with begins to have chest discomfort, call or text 9-1-1 right away.
- If you have a history of heart disease do not shovel without your doctor’s OK.
- Take breaks while shoveling and do not overexert yourself, especially if you are usually inactive.
- Push the snow instead of lifting where possible.
- Bundle up and wear layers — it’s very cold outside. Protect yourself from frostbite and/or hypothermia.
With a Cold Weather Advisory in effect tonight, icy conditions are predicted to continue, prompting a number of closures for tomorrow (Tuesday), including of Fairfax County Public Schools.
