After waiting through five months and one blizzard, the Cathy Hudgins Community Center at Southgate is back in action.

The Reston-based community center (12125 Pinecrest Road) will celebrate its reopening following an extended renovation with a party at 1-4 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday).

The free, family-friendly event will offer pizza, snacks, games and other activities, according to the Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS), which operates the facility.

NCS Communications Director Cristin Bratt says the celebration is moving forward, despite county government closures due to Sunday’s winter storm delaying the community center’s return. The facility was scheduled to resume programming this past Monday (Jan. 26), but the county didn’t reopen most facilities until Wednesday (Jan. 28).

“Any updates will be shared on the web and social, but we do not anticipate any at this time,” Bratt told FFXnow when asked about potential scheduling changes.

The Hudgins Community Center had been closed since mid-August 2025 for a remodeling that included new flooring and a full update of its heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system, whose “deficiencies” had begun to disrupt operations, NCS said.

During the renovation, many programs and services were temporarily relocated to other sites, though the facility’s outdoor athletic courts remained available for use.

“NCS thanks other centers and community partners, including Fairfax County Public Schools, Reston Community Center and Stonegate Village Apartments, for hosting programs during the renovation,” the department said in a press release.

Renamed after the late Hunter Mill District supervisor in 2021, the Hudgins Community Center hosts a senior center, art and teen rooms, a computer lab, and recreational facilities, including a gymnasium. It’s also a regular stop for the Capital Area Food Bank’s mobile market program, which will be present on Saturdays from 8-11 a.m. going forward.

Other programs expected to resume include yoga classes, senior and teen programs, family zumba, ESOL classes and a re-engagement center with education and employment support for youths.
