Arlington-founded bakery aims to open Vienna location this spring

Arlington-founded Bakeshop is getting closer to opening in the former location of Skorpios Maggio’s Greek Family Restaurant in Vienna.

Monica Garcia, the general manager at Bakeshop, told FFXnow that the bakery expects to open at 421 Maple Avenue East in early April. The business had originally hoped to open sometime in 2025.

“The buildout has taken a bit longer than expected, but we are very happy with it,” Garcia said. “It’s a beautiful space and we cannot wait to get in there and start baking and getting to know the fine people of Vienna.”

Bakeshop launched in Arlington’s Clarendon neighborhood in 2010 after founder and owner Justin Stegall sold his cupcakes at various coffee shops. While Bakeshop started at the height of the national gourmet cupcake craze, it evolved to offer other desserts like cakes, macarons, cookies and pies, as well as breakfast sandwiches.

The business expanded to Falls Church in 2019 and later crossed the Potomac River into Georgetown, though the latter location is now closed.

Garcia previously told FFXnow that Vienna was chosen for the bakery’s expansion because the Bakeshop team “always loved the community feel.”

The Maple Avenue location has been vacant since Skorpios Maggio’s closed on June 13, 2024. Owners Chris and Sherry Maggio had announced that they were stepping away to “prioritize our family time and health,” Patch reported.

At the time, the family said they were finalizing plans to hand off the restaurant to new owners, but the deal fell through.
