Parking restrictions proposed in parts of Dranesville District near Herndon

Fairfax County officials are contemplating restricting parking in parts of the Dranesville District north and south of the Town of Herndon.

Dranesville District Supervisor Jimmy Bierman’s office and the Fairfax County Department of Transportation will hold an online community meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) at 7 p.m. to offer more details on the proposed community parking district.

Under the Fairfax County Code, community parking districts prohibit parking on public streets in residential areas for the following types of vehicles:

  • Any vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of 12,000 pounds or more, except school buses used regularly to transport students
  • Any vehicle designed to transport 16 or more passengers including the driver, except school buses
  • Any vehicle with three or more axles
  • Any vehicle of any size that is being used in the transportation of hazardous materials as defined in state law
  • Watercraft, boat trailers, motor homes, camping trailers or any other trailer or semi-trailer, regardless of whether attached to another vehicle

Proposed boundaries of the district include areas south of Route 7, running along the Fairfax County boundary with Loudoun County to the west, and along the Dranesville District boundary with Hunter Mill District to the east.

The Town of Herndon would not be part of the district.

Prohibitions would apply both to residents of the districts and those not living there. The restrictions would be in place at all time, with some 48-hour exemptions for vehicles performing work at a residence in the district.

Vehicles parked in violation are subject to a $75 fine for each violation, and could be towed at the owner’s expense.

Feedback on the proposal will be accepted at the meeting. Additional feedback can be provided through April 30 by phone at 703-890-5898 (Project Code 2283) or via an online survey.

Large Area Community Parking Districts can be found across Fairfax County, and are the norm, rather than the exception, in much of the southern part of the county. An existing parking district closer to the proposed district encompasses Reston and areas to its south.

The Board of Supervisors will determine whether to establish the proposed district after holding a public hearing, which has not been scheduled yet.
