Registration is now open for the sixth annual Tour de Hunter Mill community bicycle ride set for Sunday, May 3. Participants can choose between riding two scenic routes — 11 or 19 miles — designed to accommodate both beginners and experienced cyclists.
This year’s event will highlight Vienna, according to Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn, who started the event in 2021.
Routes change annually to showcase different parts of the district. Last year’s ride, for instance, was concentrated more in the west toward Reston and Herndon, highlighting recently added pedestrian and bicycling facilities.
“The idea is for this event to be for people of all abilities,” Alcorn said at the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors meeting last Tuesday (April 14). “And each year we feature new routes to give riders a fresh view and highlight bike-friendly areas across the district.”
The event will start and end at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens and run from 8 a.m. to noon, but riders can take as long as they need. It will be held rain or shine.
Cyclists will travel through Vienna’s bike-friendly neighborhoods and green spaces, passing local parks and using trails along the I-66 and Route 7 corridors. The route also highlights lesser-known roads leading to the Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts.
Registration costs $30 for adults, while children under 15 can participate for free with a registered adult. Registrants will also receive a pair of tie-dyed bike socks commemorating the rise.
A portion of the proceeds goes toward supporting local cycling advocacy through the Fairfax Alliance for Better Bicycling.
