Fairfax County police believe a teenager was behind the recent fatal stabbing at the Farrington Place condominiums.

The unnamed 16-year-old boy was arrested by detectives on Wednesday (May 13) and charged with first-degree murder, the Fairfax County Police Department announced yesterday (Thursday).

Officers were dispatched to the Farrington Place condominiums in the 2200 block of Farrington Avenue around 12:15 a.m. on Saturday (May 9) for the reported stabbing.

“[Officers] located an adult male victim suffering from trauma to the upper body,” Fairfax County Police Department Public Affairs Bureau commander Capt. Chris Cosgriff said in a brief update early that morning. “The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

The FCPD identified the victim later that day as 19-year-old Auner Chavez Diaz, stating that his body was found with multiple stab wounds between two of the condo buildings.

In its update on Thursday, the FCPD said Chavez Diaz and the boy who has been charged with his murder “are known to each other,” but didn’t elaborate on their connection.

“There is no threat to the community,” the police department said. “Detectives continue to conduct interviews and process evidence recovered from the scene to determine the circumstances that led up to the fatal stabbing.”

The 16-year-old is now in custody at the Fairfax County Juvenile Detention Center.

There have now been seven homicides in Fairfax County so far this year, per the FCPD’s data portal. That includes former Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax’s fatal shooting of his wife, Cerina Fairfax; the death of an infant in Bailey’s Crossroads; a fatal stabbing in Bailey’s Crossroads; a fatal stabbing at a Hybla Valley bus stop; and a triple stabbing at a Mantua home where a man killed his wife and daughter before being fatally shot by police.

In addition, a woman died after she and three other people were stabbed by a man on I-495 near Annandale on March 1. The 32-year-old man from McLean also died at a hospital after he was shot by Virginia State Police troopers.
