A motorcyclist has died following a crash involving a tractor-trailer on Route 29 in the Fair Lakes area.
Officers and units with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department were dispatched around 1:51 p.m. Tuesday (May 19) for the crash on Route 29 at Meadow Estates Drive, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.
A dispatcher indicated that the motorcycle rider became trapped underneath his bike’s wheels and was not breathing, according to scanner traffic.
“The motorcyclist, an adult male, was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the FCPD said in a social media post around 2:15 p.m.
With all lanes on Route 29 closed for the crash investigation, traffic slowed to a crawl near West Ox Road, Virginia Department of Transportation traffic cameras showed. Police advised drivers to “use an alternate route.”
Also contributing to the congestion was ongoing construction on a roadway widening project that has been underway since February 2023. Expected to finish this summer, the project is expanding Route 29 from four to six lanes and adding shared-use paths between Union Mill Road and Buckleys Gate Drive, just east of Centreville.
Based on a preliminary investigation, police believe the motorcyclist — identified as 22-year-old Mikhail Perry from Fairfax — was heading north on Route 29 when he collided with a southbound 2016 Mack Semi Truck whose driver was attempting a U-turn.
“Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash,” the FCPD said. “Preliminarily, detectives believe speed was a factor in the crash for the motorcyclist.”
This is the second fatal crash on Fairfax County roads within the past week, following a single-vehicle crash on Route 123 in Oakton on Sunday (May 17) that killed two adults and sent two children to the hospital.
Another motorcyclist was killed last month after colliding with a pickup truck on the Capital Beltway (I-495) in the Rose Hill area. According to state data, crashes involving motorcycles have now resulted in 96 fatalities in Fairfax County since 2010, peaking at 11 deaths in 2024.
Crash Reconstruction detectives are responding to the scene. Please use an alternate route. (2/2)
