King Arthur Baking Company’s popular pop-up store at Fairfax Corner is getting ready to close, as the company shifts its focus to a permanent location coming later this year to Northern Virginia.
The pop-up at 11948 Grand Commons Avenue, which opened in September 2024, is slated to close on June 25. As of yesterday (Monday), the remaining inventory is on sale until the store’s closure.
“While our Fairfax Corner pop-up was always envisioned as a temporary experience, we were lucky to be there almost 2 years, and being part of that community has meant a great deal to us,” Carey Underwood, director of marketing communications, told FFXnow. “We’ve loved connecting with local bakers, sharing our products and resources, and seeing such an enthusiastic response—it’s been incredibly energizing for our team, and we’re so grateful to everyone who welcomed us in.
Underwood also confirmed that the company’s new location at 617 King Street in Old Town Alexandria is on track to open in the fall.
“The pop-up has also been an important learning opportunity as we look ahead to our permanent store. It gave us a chance to test elements like product mix, in-store programming, and the overall customer experience—and those insights will help what’s to come in Alexandria.”
Text updates on the new store will be available by texting BAKEVA to 27820.
King Arthur also operates a flagship location in Norwich, Vermont. The Fairfax pop-up was the second in the company’s history, with one previously operating in Greenville, South Carolina, from November to December 2023.
The Fairfax Corner store stuck around longer than anticipated. Initially expected to close last July, King Arthur extended its stay first through January 2026 and then again through June.
“While it’s always bittersweet to close a pop-up, we truly hope to see many of our Fairfax customers again in Alexandria,” Underwood said. “It’s a community we’ve really valued being part of, and we’re looking forward to building on those relationships in this next chapter.”
Later this fall, Joybird, a Los Angeles-based made-to-order furniture company, will open a new store in the space, a spokesperson for Fairfax Corner confirmed to FFXnow. The showroom, which is the company’s first in Virginia, was announced earlier this year.
Fairfax Corner has seen a few businesses coming and going over the last few months. Just a few doors down from the King Arthur pop-up, Ruthie’s All-Day opened in mid-April, its first expansion since launching in Arlington in 2020.
Fairfax Corner owner Peterson Companies also previously announced that Sephora will open at 11922 Grand Commons Avenue next year. Other businesses slated to open include Cafesano Italian and Mediterranean Bistro, Chateau de Chantilly, and Nando’s Peri-Peri.
