Not Your Average Joe’s in Reston to close for good next month

A decade of business in Reston will come to an end next month for Not Your Average Joe’s (NYAJ).

The Massachusetts-based chain is permanently closing its location in the Spectrum at Reston Town Center on July 15, according to a sign recently posted to the restaurant’s front door.

“We are so grateful to have been a part of your great community,” the sign says. “Thank you for the many wonderful memories and all your support throughout the many years.”

Opened at the beginning of 2016, the Reston NYAJ was the franchise’s fifth outpost in the D.C. region at the time, moving into a prominent storefront at 1845 Fountain Drive that had previously belonged to Romano’s Macaroni Grill.

Since then, a few other locations in the area have closed. NYAJ’s first restaurant in the area at Lansdowne Town Center in Leesburg shuttered in 2017, and two in Montgomery County, Maryland, followed suit in 2020 and July 2022.

With the Reston location’s closure, the chain will have a total of 11 locations, all in the northeastern and Mid-Atlantic regions of the U.S. Local diners will be able to find it in Woodbridge and Bethesda.

FFXnow has reached out to the company’s corporate office and the general manager of the Reston restaurant for comment.

Despite its name, coffee isn’t a signature item on the menu for Not Your Average Joe’s. The chain instead serves a variety of made-from-scratch food — from pizzas and pasta to BBQ meatloaf, jambalaya and ahi tuna poke bowls — with an extensive drinks menu, including cocktails, wine and draft beers.

It also has happy hour, brunch and seasonal items.

NYAJ was started in 1994 by Stephen Silverstein, a Dartmouth, Massachusetts, native who wanted to give his home a “unique neighborhood place with great food and better company,” according to its website.

NYAJ’s impending departure from the 7,587-square-foot standalone building at the corner of Reston Parkway and New Dominion Parkway will give the Spectrum another sizable vacancy after On the Border closed in February 2025 and has yet to be replaced.

Even so, the shopping center appears to be mostly leased with Whole Foods Market, Barnes & Noble, Harris Teeter and the rebranding Container Store as its anchors. Remaining dining options will include La Madeline, Cava Mezze Grill, Einstein Bagels and South Block.
