Lidl to open next month in former Whole Foods at Idylwood Plaza

Idylwood and Pimmit Hills residents will have a new destination for obtaining groceries, starting next month.

Lidl announced today that its latest store will open its doors in Idylwood Plaza at 7511 Leesburg Pike on Aug. 12. The German chain is taking over a portion of the massive space vacated in February 2025 by Whole Foods Market, which relocated to Falls Church City.

Launching a bit sooner than the late 2026 opening previously anticipated by shopping center owner Federal Realty, the 23,485-square-foot grocery store will celebrate its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:40 a.m. Shoppers can expect exclusive deals as well as complimentary croissants and coffee, according to a press release.

“We’re a neighborhood favorite for a reason, delivering unique options and everyday savings to our communities,” Lidl said in the release. “At Lidl US, shoppers will discover a grocery store centered on value, quality, and efficiency. From private label picks and imported goods to fresh local produce, you’ll get to experience the quality we’re famous for in Europe — without using your passport.”

Known for discounted prices and an unique mix of both local and imported products, Lidl has been expanding in the D.C. region since establishing its U.S. headquarters in Arlington in June 2015.

The Idylwood Plaza store will be Lidl’s 12th store in Fairfax County, putting it on par with rival German discount grocer Aldi. Just in the past couple of years, the chain has added locations in Herndon, Centreville and nearby Tysons.

After its grand opening, Lidl will operate from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily in Idylwood. More from the press release on what shoppers can expect:

  • Fresh Finds: Smell that? It’s the famous Lidl US bakery, offering freshly baked bread and pastries all day long.

In addition to provisions, Lidl sells a variety of kitchenware, home décor and even fitness gear.

Lidl is one of four new tenants moving into the former Whole Foods storefront, which has been subdivided into smaller spaces. In the coming months, the grocer will be joined by the juice shop South Block and fast-casual eateries Potbelly and Qdoba Mexican Eats.

According to Federal Realty’s site plan for Idylwood Plaza, one new 1,181-square-foot space remains available for leasing.
