The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors last week fast-tracked consideration of plans by the Mount Vernon Country Club to update facilities on its 128-acre site.
Mount Vernon District Supervisor Dan Storck suggested the proposal has generated no pushback, allowing for a truncated review process once it clears the county’s planning commission.
“It is important that we move this project forward as expeditiously as possible,” he told colleagues at the board’s Sept. 15 meeting.
Unanimously and without further comment, the body authorized a Dec. 8 public hearing to consider the requested changes.
It will be held shortly after an expected Nov. 18 Planning Commission hearing on the club’s request for special exception amendments to allow rehabilitation work to move ahead.
The club was established in the early 1960s and requires renovations, officials said in their filing with county leaders:
“Many of the existing structures onsite, including the current pool facilities and the maintenance facility that are subject to this request, were built back in the 1990s. While there have been limited, minor improvements to these structures over the years, no significant upgrades have been made since their original construction. Thus, the applicant seeks to demolish these specific existing structures and create new and modernized facilities.”
Among the changes included in the proposal are:
- Modifications to certain tee boxes, fairways, greens and bunkers and adjustments to the overall cart-path layout, including a new bridge near Hole #9
- Improvements to the driving range, including erection of a new 50-foot containment structure
- Reconfiguration and enlargement of both the main and “kiddie” swimming pools and surrounding deck areas
- Replacement of the existing one-story pool house with a two-story pool and grille house
- Relocation of and upgrading to certain maintenance facilities
- Drainage improvements
The 127.73-acre site encompasses four separate land parcels, all zoned R-2, a low-density residential district. No changes to the existing zoning designations are being sought.
The club’s 18-hole championship golf course was inaugurated in 1961 with an exhibition match featuring Sam Snead, and most recently saw significant improvements in 2016, officials say on the club’s website.
In addition to the golf and swimming facilities, the club is able to host social events for up to 200 people.
