Two pedestrians were seriously injured and another was killed in three separate vehicle crashes on Fairfax County roads this past weekend.
Officers with the Fairfax County Police Department responded yesterday (Sunday) at 3:47 a.m. for a crash involving a pedestrian on southbound Route 28 near Air and Space Museum Parkway, according to a press release issued this afternoon (Monday).
Based on an initial investigation, police believe Juan Linares Terrero, a 24-year-old man from Sterling, was walking in the right lane of southbound Route 28 when he was struck by the driver of a Ford Mustang.
He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The Ford driver stayed at the scene and didn’t report any injuries, the FCPD said.
“Preliminarily, speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors for the driver,” the FCPD said in its update. “Alcohol is under investigation for the pedestrian.”
The crash occurred around 4:15 a.m. Crash Reconstruction detectives are investigating. Two southbound lanes of Route 28 remain closed north of Route 50. Please use an alternate route. (2/2)

The fatal crash came in the wake of two separate crashes on Friday (Oct. 16) that sent pedestrians to the hospital.
At 6:58 p.m. that day, FCPD officers responded to a pedestrian crash at South George Mason Drive and Leesburg Pike (Route 7) in Bailey’s Crossroads.
“The adult female pedestrian was struck by a vehicle and transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries,” the FCPD said. “The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and was not injured.”
According to the FCPD, a preliminary investigation found that the pedestrian was crossing South George Mason Drive in a crosswalk when the “walk” signal changed to “do not walk.”
“As she continued crossing, she was struck by a Jeep Liberty traveling southbound S. George Mason Drive on a green light,” the department’s public affairs bureau told FFXnow.
The driver was issued a summons for driving without a license, but the crash remains under investigation by detectives.

Separately, officers were dispatched at 9:10 p.m. on Friday for a pedestrian crash on Route 29 at the Blake Lane intersection in Oakton.
“Preliminarily, an adult male pedestrian, was crossing Route 29 just before Blake Lane outside of a crosswalk when he was struck by a Hyundai Elantra,” the FCPD said.
As in the Bailey’s Crossroads crash, the pedestrian was transported to a hospital with injuries described as life-threatening, while the driver remained at the scene and didn’t experience any injuries, according to the FCPD.
Eastbound Route 29 was temporarily shut down from Blake Lane to Circle Wood Drive so officers could clear the scene, and Crash Reconstruction Unit detectives could begin their investigation.

As of 7 a.m. today, the pedestrians injured in both crashes on Friday night remain in the hospital, the FCPD says.
Yesterday’s Route 28 crash brings Fairfax County’s pedestrian death toll for 2026 up to 18 people by FFXnow’s count. It was the second fatal crash involving a pedestrian so far this month, following a hit-and-run incident at Old Keene Mill Road and Backlick Road in Springfield on Oct. 4.
