A driver was killed in a multi-vehicle crash on I-95 near Lorton that brought the northbound lanes to a standstill this afternoon (Monday).
According to the Virginia State Police, two drivers were traveling “at a high rate of speed” around 1 p.m. when one of them — the driver of a 2013 BMW 650I convertible — changed lanes and hit a third vehicle, a 2020 Mercedes E-Class near the 163-mile marker south of Lorton Road.
“The Mercedes then struck the guardrail, and the BMW struck the jersey wall, and the driver of the BMW was ejected,” state police said in an update on Tuesday, Dec. 17. “The driver was then struck by the Mercedes.”
The BMW driver, identified by police as 35-year-old D.C. resident Kenneth D. Buckner, died at the scene.
A passenger in the BMW, 29-year-old Tyra Williams, was partially ejected and taken to a hospital with serious injuries, police said.
Buckner and Williams weren’t wearing seatbelts, according to the VSP.
“The crash remains under investigation,” the VSP said. “The other vehicle that was traveling at a high rate of speed is being described as a dark colored Infinity sedan. It did not strike any vehicles.”
Fairfax Alerts sent out a notice about the crash at 1:21 p.m., warning drivers of delays with I-95 North closed.
All traffic except for trucks was diverted onto Richmond Highway (Route 1), though one left lane had reopened by 1:47 p.m., the Virginia Department of Transportation said on Twitter. As of 3:15 p.m., traffic backups still extended approximately 5 miles, according to VDOT’s traffic camera website.
