Another pedestrian has been killed in a crash on Fairfax County roads.

Officers were dispatched for a crash involving a pedestrian at Route 29 and Braxton Wood Court, just north of the Providence Place (formerly Pan Am) shopping center, in Merrifield at 6:48 p.m. on Monday (Dec. 29), according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

Upon arriving, police located the pedestrian — a 53-year-old woman with no fixed address — and found that she had sustained life-threatening injuries. She was transported to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Route 29 was shut down in both directions, with officers diverting traffic onto the parallel service road as Crash Reconstruction Unit detectives investigated.

“Please use an alternate route,” the FCPD said at the time.

Based on a preliminary investigation, officers believe the woman was standing in the left lane of Route 29 just west of Braxton Wood Court when an eastbound driver of a 2020 Nissan Rogue struck her, the FCPD said in a Dec. 30 press release.

The woman was then struck again by a different vehicle that detectives are still attempting to locate.

The Nissan driver remained at the scene and didn’t report any injuries, police say, noting that the pedestrian’s identity is being withheld until her next-of-kin can be notified.

“Alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in the crash,” the FCPD said. “The circumstances surrounding the crash are still being investigated.”

By FFXnow’s count, this is the 13th pedestrian fatality that Fairfax County has seen in 2025, though preliminary state data currently only shows eight deaths. Some crashes from November and December don’t appear to have been recorded yet.
