The Fairfax County Police Department has confirmed that the man found dead in a median on Fairfax County Parkway on Wednesday (Dec. 24) was a pedestrian killed in a crash.
Officers responded at 9:43 a.m. that day after a community member who was driving by on the parkway reported seeing a possible body in the grassy median near Old Plains Road in the Fair Oaks area.
The man was declared deceased by members of the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department who arrived at the scene first, prompting police to conduct a death investigation, FCPD Capt. Jesse Katzman previously reported.
According to Katzman, the man’s body showed signs of trauma, and their initial “working theory” was that he had been hit by a passing vehicle. That was confirmed when the driver believed to have been involved in the crash returned to the scene, police said in a press release.
“The circumstances surrounding the crash are still being investigated,” the FCPD said. “Preliminarily, alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash. Detectives continue to investigate whether speed was a factor.”
As of press time, police were working to notify the pedestrian’s next-of-kin before publicly identifying him. They described him as a 50-year-old man with no fixed address.
According to the FCPD, its Crash Reconstruction Unit detectives are still looking to talk to anyone who may have more information about the crash.
“Those with information are asked to please call our Crash Reconstruction Unit at 703-280-0543,” the department said.
Preliminary data reported to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles shows eight pedestrian fatalities in Fairfax County in 2025, though that doesn’t appear to include two deaths in November — one of which came days after the crash — or a deadly crash that occurred on Richmond Highway on Dec. 7.
The unnamed man killed on Fairfax County Parkway brings the county’s death toll up to 12 pedestrians.
