A motorcyclist has died following a crash involving a tractor-trailer on Route 29 in the Fair Lakes area.
Officers and units with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department were dispatched around 1:51 p.m. today (Tuesday) for the crash on Route 29 at Meadow Estates Drive, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.
A dispatcher indicated that the motorcycle rider became trapped underneath his bike’s wheels and was not breathing, according to scanner traffic.
“The motorcyclist, an adult male, was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the FCPD said in a social media post around 2:15 p.m.
With all lanes on Route 29 closed for the crash investigation, traffic has slowed to a crawl near West Ox Road, Virginia Department of Transportation traffic cameras show. It’s unclear how long the closure will last, but police are advising drivers to “use an alternate route.”
Also contributing to the congestion is ongoing construction on a roadway widening project that has been underway since February 2023. Expected to finish this summer, the project is expanding Route 29 from four to six lanes and adding shared-use paths between Union Mill Road and Buckleys Gate Drive, just east of Centreville.
“Detectives are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash,” the FCPD said.
This is the second fatal crash on Fairfax County roads within the past week, following a single-vehicle crash on Route 123 in Oakton on Sunday (May 17) that killed two adults and sent two children to the hospital.
Crash Reconstruction detectives are responding to the scene. Please use an alternate route. (2/2)
