A pedestrian was killed earlier this evening (Sunday) after being struck by a Metrobus in Bailey’s Crossroads.
Emergency personnel were dispatched to Columbia Pike at Carlin Springs Road at around 8:34 p.m. for a crash involving a trapped pedestrian, according to scanner traffic.
“It’s going to be a bus, struck a pedestrian. The pedestrian is stuck underneath the bus,” a dispatcher said, identifying the vehicle as a Metrobus.
According to the Fairfax County Police Department, the pedestrian, an adult man, was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The bus driver remained at the scene.
“Carlin Springs Road is closed in both directions,” the FCPD said. “Please use an alternate route. Crash Reconstruction Unit detectives are investigating.”
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority confirmed to FFXnow that an F20 Metrobus was involved in the fatal crash.
The bus route is Metro’s most heavily used in Virginia, traveling from Tysons to Alexandria along Leesburg Pike. Regional leaders anticipate eventually supplementing it with a Route 7 bus rapid transit system.
“The pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries, and CPR was initiated. Sadly, the pedestrian was pronounced deceased at an area hospital,” a Metro spokesperson said in a statement. “The investigation is ongoing, and is being led by Fairfax County PD.”
Just minutes later, another pedestrian was reportedly struck by a vehicle in Arlington County at S. Glebe Road and South 14th Street, about two miles away from the Columbia Pike crash, according to FFXnow’s sister site ARLnow.
