A new grocery store appears to have been secured for Reston’s Plaza America.
The German discount chain Lidl has “just signed” a lease for the former Whole Foods Market space at 11660 Plaza America Drive, according to a site plan recently updated by CBRE, the retail broker for the shopping center.
The storefront has been vacant since Whole Foods relocated to the Spectrum at Reston Town Center in August 2025. The grocer, now owned by Amazon, had been operating at Plaza America since 1996, but its new location is nearly twice as large at 46,711 square feet.

If Lidl is indeed coming to Plaza America, it wouldn’t be the first time that the grocer has taken over a location previously occupied by Whole Foods. The same swap occurred at Idylwood Plaza, where Lidl opened on Aug. 12 after Whole Foods moved to the new Broad & Washington development in Falls Church City.
This would be Lidl’s 13th store in Fairfax County, where it has recently been expanding at a rate of roughly one location a year. In addition to the Idylwood outpost, the chain has opened stores in Herndon, Centreville and Tysons over the past three years.
Other changes in the works at Plaza America include the impending closure of Mod Pizza at the end of September, paving the way for the regional chain Andy’s Pizza.
CBRE’s site plan also indicates that it has pending deals for a vacant space adjacent to the former Whole Foods and one next to Michael’s that has been empty since Performance Bicycle Shop shuttered in 2019.
The broker is still advertising four suites as available for leasing, including the 3,516-square-foot space currently occupied by Noodles & Company and a 1,303-square-foot space where Tropical Smoothie Cafe is still operating. It’s unclear when the leases for those businesses are set to expire or if they might be able to extend their stay if no replacements are identified.
Also listed as available are an 11,963-square-foot space on the second floor at 11694 Plaza America Drive — where the software company Macedon Technologies expanded its offices in 2020 — and a new, 1,995-square-foot suite adjacent to Citizens Bank.
