An oversized vehicle will be heading north through Fairfax County this evening (Wednesday), contributing to what are expected to be “significant travel delays,” the Virginia Department of Transportation warns.
The “oversize load” is scheduled to travel through Virginia on I-77 North, I-81 North, I-66 East and the northbound lanes of the Capital Beltway (I-495) as it heads from North Carolina to Maryland between 7 p.m. today and 5 a.m. tomorrow morning (Thursday).
VDOT didn’t share any more details about what the load will be. A spokesperson stated only that the department is “helping accommodate the movement,” directing FFXnow to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles for more information.
A DMV spokesperson says the oversized load “is reportedly a sculpture.”
What is confirmed is that the vehicle and its cargo will occupy more than two lanes of traffic on major highways at the tail end of the afternoon rush hour.
“As part of the approved route, there will be multiple planned pull-off locations to allow traffic to pass,” VDOT said in a press release. “Drivers are encouraged to avoid these routes overnight and check 511 ahead of necessary travel to avoid delays.”
The vehicle will be accompanied by a Virginia State Police escort and tow trucks that “will be available to assist as needed,” VDOT said.
Virginia issues hauling permits to vehicles that exceed its maximum dimensions for traveling on state highways. According to the DMV, size limits include:
- Height: 13 feet 6 inches
- Width: 8 feet 6 inches
- Length (Motorized Vehicles other than Buses or Motor Homes): 40 feet
- Length (Trailers): 48 feet (53-foot trailers are allowed on interstate system)
- Length (Vehicle/Trailer Combination): 65 feet, Overhang: 4 feet – Rear 3 feet – Front
- Weight (Single Axle): 20,000 pounds
- Weight (Tandem Axle): 34,000 pounds
Escorts are required under Virginia law for oversize and overweight vehicles on interstates that are carrying loads exceeding 12 feet in width or 120 feet in length.
Oversized loads have disrupted traffic in the past. This spring, trucks carrying parts for the Rocky Forge Wind Farm in Botetourt County traveled along U.S. Highway 220 to Eagle Rock for about two months.
