Most Fairfax County residents woke up this morning (Monday) to a wintry landscape, but the amount of snow they saw varied depending on exactly where in the county they live.

Snow accumulations from the storm that arrived in the D.C. region yesterday (Sunday) afternoon ranged from a mere inch in the Mount Vernon area to 4.5 inches in Reston, the highest amount recorded in the county, according to preliminary data from the National Weather Service.

Residents have started to return to the Centreville neighborhood that was evacuated last week after a gas leak fueled an explosion and fire that consumed one home.

As of noon yesterday (Sunday), Washington Gas has restored service to 44 homes determined to be clear for re-entry, 42 of which have seen occupants return, the utility said in an afternoon update.


Countywide

After initially planning a two-hour delay, Fairfax County Public Schools has now canceled classes tomorrow (Monday) as snow has begun to accumulate across the D.C. region.

“Due to the worsening weather conditions, and after careful consideration, all FCPS schools and central offices will now be closed Monday, February 23, 2026,” FCPS said in an update issued shortly after 6:20 p.m.


Countywide

Fairfax County could benefit economically from a casino-anchored development, but the numbers might be more modest than previously shared projections, an internal review by the county suggests.

A Fairfax County casino would produce an estimated $313.6 million in gaming revenue, delivering $62.1 million in local and state taxes, the county’s Department of Management and Budget said in a summary of a feasibility study it commissioned from the consultant MuniCap.

Reston residents will get the chance to learn more about their potential representatives on Reston Association’s Board of Directors with a pair of upcoming candidate forums.

Candidates vying for three open seats will first participate in a virtual forum held at 6:30 p.m. tonight (Thursday) by the Reston Citizens Association, followed by an in-person and live-streamed forum at RA’s headquarters (12001 Sunrise Valley Drive) at the same time next Tuesday (Feb. 24).

Fairfax County intends to move forward with phasing out the use of police officers as school crossing guards.

The Fairfax County Police Department would eliminate crossing guards at local public high schools and turn to contractors to fill vacancies at elementary and middle schools under the fiscal year 2027 budget proposed on Tuesday (Feb. 17) by County Executive Bryan Hill.


Around Town

Toastique’s expansion in Fairfax County will continue next month with an opening at Reston Town Center.

The gourmet toast chain is planning to hold a grand opening for its new location at 11900 Inspiration Street on Saturday, March 7, offering $50 in reward dollars to the first 100 customers who make a purchase of at least $10.


Countywide

Please stop flushing wipes down the toilet, even if they’re labeled “flushable,” Fairfax County said in a recent message to community members.

The county’s Department of Public Works and Environmental Services urged residents late last week to avoid flushing anything other than toilet paper after a mass of non-disposable wipes clogged a regional sewer pipeline, exacerbating overflows into the Potomac River.

A pair of Arlington-based technology companies are planning new offices in Fairfax County, collectively promising over 300 new jobs.

First, the space tech manufacturer Umbra announced last Thursday (Feb. 12) that it will expand to Reston, opening a 20,000-square-foot office expected to host over 100 employees. Then, defense contractor Grvty revealed yesterday (Tuesday) that it will establish a new corporate headquarters in Tysons.

Fairfax County’s new western high school won’t be named Western High School after all.

The school board voted unanimously last Thursday (Feb. 12) to instead adopt “Skyview High School” as the new name of the former King Abdullah Academy campus at 2949 Education Drive, near Dulles International Airport and the National Air and Space Museum’s Udvar-Hazy Center in the Floris area south of Herndon.
