Fairfax County to update vision for aging Mount Vernon facilities

Time is running out to weigh in early on the future of Fairfax County’s Mount Vernon District facilities.

County staff and Mount Vernon District Supervisor Dan Storck’s office are soliciting input on potential improvements to the governmental center, fire and police stations, and public library through a community survey that’s scheduled to close after tomorrow (Friday).

Dogs to take over The Water Mine in Reston this Saturday

The Water Mine in Reston is closing out the summer this Saturday (Sept. 6) with the return of its annual “Dog Daze” event.

The Gold Rush-themed water park, which is located in Lake Fairfax Park at 1400 Lake Fairfax Drive, will become a pooches-only zone from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. after concluding its human operations for the season on Monday (Sept. 1).

Almost two months after President Donald Trump signed his so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” into law, the legislation’s health care implications remain hazy.

Adopted on July 4, the federal budget reconciliation package introduced a number of changes to Medicaid, Medicare and the marketplace created by the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that could lead to an additional 10 million uninsured people in the U.S. by 2034, according to the U.S. Congressional Budget Office’s (CBO) most recent estimates.

Input wanted on rebuild of Reston playground damaged by storm

A Reston playground that was damaged by a storm this spring could return soon with some improvements.

Reston Association is currently seeking community feedback on potential upgrades for the Old Trail playground, which was mostly taken out by trees that fell during a rain storm on May 14, communications director Cara O’Donnell says.

An emerging trend of developers backing off of multifamily housing in favor of single-family housing has reached Tysons.

Property owner Link Logistics is seeking more flexibility in the type of residential development allowed in The Mile, a mixed-use project originally approved in 2019 to replace a 38-acre business park in north central Tysons.

A new mural is taking shape in McLean.

Jeremy Jarvis, an Ohio-based artist whose works have been displayed around the world, has been commissioned by the McLean Community Center to transform an exterior wall of the Old Firehouse Center (1440 Chain Bridge Road) into a celebration of its 50th anniversary.

Update — Corsica Wine Bar is now open at Reston Town Center, a spokesperson confirmed to FFXnow.

It’s currently open for walk-in diners from 4 p.m. to midnight on Sunday through Thursday, and from 2 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Reservations will begin on Sept. 15, and brunch and happy hours are “coming soon.”

Fairfax County sheriff’s deputy charged with domestic assault

A deputy with the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office was charged last week with assaulting a family member at the Camden Fairfax Corner Apartments in Fair Oaks.

Fairfax County police officers responded at 4:43 p.m. on Friday (Aug. 29) to what was initially described as a report of a woman brandishing a weapon in the 4200 block of Summit Corner Drive, according to the police scanner.

BREAKING: FCPS sues Education Department for freezing funding over transgender policies

The Fairfax County School Board is suing the Trump administration for withholding federal funds in retaliation for its refusal to scrap policies supporting transgender students.

At its meeting last night (Thursday), its first of the new academic year, the school board authorized a lawsuit against the U.S. Education Department alleging that its denial of funds to Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) violates federal laws and the Constitution, Superintendent Michelle Reid announced today.

Advocates for immigrants allege ‘degrading’ conditions at ICE office in Chantilly

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Chantilly field office, typically used for administrative proceedings, is being turned into a “makeshift” detention facility, dozens of immigrant rights advocacy groups say.

With arrests surging during the ongoing federal takeover of D.C., ICE has begun detaining individuals for “several days at a time” in a holding room intended to keep people just for a few hours during processing, according to organizations in the Free Them All VA Coalition.
