A family-owned bakery with strong local roots is now serving pastries, coffee and more in Vienna.

Shilla Bakery and Cafe opened its doors in Jades Shopping Center at 340 Maple Avenue West yesterday (Monday), taking over a space that had been vacant since Al Nakheel Lebanese Cafe & Market closed in 2022.

An abundance of rain in recent weeks has alleviated the drought plaguing Northern Virginia, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) says.

The department announced this morning (Monday) that it has lifted drought advisories for the entire Commonwealth, including a drought watch for Fairfax County and the rest of Northern Virginia that had been in place since September.

Fairfax County Public Schools is taking over King Abdullah Academy’s campus in the Floris area south of Herndon.

The Fairfax County School Board voted 9-0 with three abstentions last Thursday (June 12) to approve a $150 million acquisition of approximately 30 acres at 2949, 2950 and 2954 Education Drive, where the Islamic private school will cease operations after July.

An aquatics director for the Fairfax County Park Authority was arrested last week after police say he had sexual contact with a juvenile recreation center employee.

Officers were called to the Audrey Moore Rec Center (8100 Braddock Road) at Wakefield Park in Annandale at 10:49 a.m. on June 8 for a report of a sexual offense, the Fairfax County Police Department said in a press release.

The Town of Herndon is expanding its summer programming this year with a new “Town Square Tuesdays” concert series.

The free, outdoor concerts will kick off next Tuesday, June 17 on Herndon’s Town Square patio (730 Station Street) with Mystic Warriors, a band based in the D.C. area that plays Andean music.

A man has been arrested and charged with last week’s fatal stabbing at a bus stop on Richmond Highway in Groveton, police say.

Officers with the Metro Transit Police Department officers took Robert Reed, 56, into custody at the Huntington Metro Station on Sunday, June 15, ending a multi-day search for a suspect in the June 10 stabbing, the Fairfax County Police Department announced today (Monday).
