Reston Town Center North plan heading in right direction, design board says

Reston Association’s Design Review Board recently got a fresh look at the latest plan for developing Reston Town Center North (RTC North), and for the most part, members were encouraged by what they saw.

“I don’t see any reason for a motion of … approval from my sense, because we’re still working,” Design Review Board Chair Michael Wood told the development team after a presentation on July 15. “You guys got some feedback from us. I think you guys have some actionable things that you guys can provide, and you’re in the right direction for sure.”

Two-alarm fires break out at Kingstowne townhomes, Springfield gym

Significant responses were needed this morning (Wednesday) to address two-alarm fires reported almost simultaneously at townhouses in Kingstowne and a shopping center in Springfield.

Firefighters were first dispatched at 4:44 a.m. to the Coventry townhomes in the 5000 block of Dunstable Lane for a fire that consumed all three floors of one building, according to scanner traffic.

Police: Motorcyclist dies after crashing on I-495 in Huntington

Police are investigating a second fatal crash that occurred on the Capital Beltway (I-495) yesterday afternoon (Monday).

Virginia State Police troopers responded to westbound I-495 near Telegraph Road in Huntington around 5:32 p.m. for a crash involving a motorcyclist who collided with a guardrail.

Vienna identifies priorities with first-ever parks and rec master plan

Commitments to maintaining existing facilities and expanding the town’s pedestrian network are just two of the items on the Vienna Parks and Recreation Department’s to-do list for the next decade.

Formally approved by the Vienna Town Council on July 7 with only Councilmember Roy Baldwin opposed, the town’s first-ever parks and recreation master plan — dubbed “Our Plan to Play” — lays out a vision that will help guide future programming and funding decisions, identifying existing gaps and potential improvements.

Reston Association seeks feedback on Lake Thoreau dock, playground upgrades

Reston Association is turning to the community for input on plans to update a couple of its recreational facilities.

The homeowners’ association will hold a meeting at 6:30 p.m. tonight (Tuesday) to gather feedback on the Lake Thoreau observation dock, which is being considered for possible renovations.

A person was killed in a multi-vehicle crash on the Capital Beltway (I-495) near North Springfield Elementary School during the afternoon rush hour today (Monday).

The crash involving a Toyota Tacoma truck, a Scion XB hatchback, a Honda Civic, a Ford F350 and a Nissan Rogue occurred around 3:08 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-495 near Braddock Road in north Springfield, according to the Virginia State Police.

Police arrest man who allegedly grabbed toddler at Fair Oaks Mall

Fairfax County police have arrested a man who allegedly stole a vehicle and tried to abduct a toddler at Fair Oaks Mall.

Officers were called to the 11700 block of Fair Oaks Shopping Center at 11:43 a.m. last Thursday (July 18) for a report of an abduction, the Fairfax County Police Department says.

Reston man found dead in vehicle parked near Delaware beach

A body found in a parked vehicle in Delaware has been identified as an 85-year-old man from Reston.

Investigators determined that Lewis Johnson died from natural causes and was subsequently driven to Rehoboth Beach by a family member, Delaware State Police said today (Monday) in a news release.

Costco in Fairfax to temporarily close gas station for expansion

Costco’s heavily used gas station in the Fair Oaks area will soon be out of commission.

Starting tomorrow (Tuesday), the big-box warehouse at 4725 West Ox Road is temporarily closing its gas station to allow construction on an expansion. The existing pumps are expected to close for about 48 days, according to notices posted at the checkout lines.

Tysons’ supply of housing for seniors could get a major boost from proposed changes to the Scotts Run development plan.

Cityline Partners, the developer behind the neighborhood south of the McLean Metro station, has enlisted the Atlanta-based senior living company Galerie Development to deliver three towers for a continuing care facility with rental homes, assisted living and memory care services, and a “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-like” array of amenities.
