Teacher sentenced for assaulting students at Burke school, will appeal conviction

A teacher at White Oaks Elementary School in Burke has been found guilty of two counts of simple assault, stemming from multiple incidents involving students.

Elizabeth Yoshimi Nagagata, 63, intends to appeal the outcome of the March 31 hearing, which resulted in a total 20-day jail sentence, according to court records.

One man is dead and another is battling life-threatening injuries after an early-morning shooting in Woodlawn on Thursday (April 3).

The Fairfax County Police Department responded to the Mallard Courts Apartments in the 8400 block of Madge Lane around 1:31 a.m. for a report of shots fired.

Retired Fairfax County fire captain dies of occupational cancer

Captain Barry Maham, who served with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department (FCFRD) for more than 25 years, has died of an occupational-related cancer.

Maham, 50, died Monday (March 31), nearly four-and-a-half years after he was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. His death is considered to have occurred in the line of duty, the department said.

A strewn cigarette butt appears to be the cause of a two-alarm house fire in Springfield over the weekend.

The “improper disposal of smoking materials” caused more than $90,000 in damages to a house in the 7000 block of Hill Stream Court on Sunday (March 30), the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department said.

Police have arrested three people believed to have stolen more than $50,000 in merchandise alone from Fairfax County beauty stores as part of a four-month crime spree.

Two D.C. men — a 21-year-old and a 28-year-old — and an unnamed 17-year-old boy are accused of burglarizing Ulta Beauty stores across the D.C. area, swiping at least $180,000 in merchandise, police said at a press conference this morning (Friday).

Fairfax County officials are likely headed back to the drawing board after a veto of a bill that would have let Northern Virginia localities host a pilot program to reduce vehicle exhaust noise.

H.B. 2550, which was introduced in the Virginia General Assembly by local Del. Rip Sullivan (D-6), was one of 157 bills vetoed by Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin on Monday (March 24).

The sentencing hearing for an au pair who pleaded guilty over her role in a 2023 double murder has been rescheduled for later this year.

Juliana Peres Magalhaes, the 24-year-old au pair believed to have shot and killed a Springfield man as part of a plot with a Herndon man who allegedly wanted to get rid of his wife, will now be sentenced on Dec. 19, according to court records.
