New Penn Daw fire station with shelter, supportive housing wins support

Fairfax County Planning Commission members gave their unanimous support on March 25 to a planned relocation of the Penn Daw Fire Station to a parcel that will also include supportive housing and an emergency shelter.

The plan, which will be considered by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on April 14, would put the new fire station and housing on a 3.5-acre site at 2801 Beacon Hill Road, one block east of Richmond Highway.

Fairfax County executive readies plan to revamp ‘placemaking’ groups

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors could soon receive a staff proposal on potentially consolidating “placemaking groups” that promote either the county as a whole or specific communities in it.

County Executive Bryan Hill said he expects to detail his proposals to elected officials later this spring.

Fairfax casino critics share range of concerns in urging Spanberger to veto legislation

A coalition of homeowners associations and civic groups is pressing Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D) to veto legislation allowing a casino in Tysons.

“Residents are deeply concerned about the potential impacts on traffic congestion, public safety, neighborhood character and the well-being of families in surrounding communities. These concerns come from people who would live with the consequences of this decision every day,” said the letter, provided to FFXnow by the Tysons Stakeholders Alliance.

Fairfax City considers criminal penalties for violations of revised noise rules

City of Fairfax officials will take six more weeks to gather input and consider options before enacting changes to the city’s noise regulations.

A final vote was delayed until May 12 after council members heard public testimony and discussed the matter among themselves on Tuesday (March 24).

Members of labor groups rallied Wednesday (March 25) in support of plans by Comstock Companies to develop an entertainment complex anchored by a casino in Tysons.

“Fairfax residents deserve to have good jobs,” said Emebet Samuel Kassa of UNITE HERE Local 25, which represents unionized hotel, restaurant and casino workers across the area.

Facility upkeep, traffic camera enforcement among priorities for additional funding

After reviewing its third-quarter financial picture, the Fairfax County government has identified about $52 million in additional funding that local leaders could spend or save, as they desire.

“There’s a number of good news stories in here,” Board Chair Jeff McKay said after a March 24 staff presentation to the Board’s Budget Policy Committee.

Dulles Airport’s incoming Concourse E set for another major step forward

Dulles International Airport is about to mark another milestone as the opening of its 14-gate Concourse E draws closer.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority expects to take possession of concessions facilities from Turner Construction Co. on March 30. On April 1, contractors for restaurants, retail outlets and other concessionaires will be able to start work on their spaces.

Compromise on ActiveFairfax plan aims to ease tensions between trail users, nature advocates

Fairfax County staff have revised language in the proposed Active Transportation and Trails Plan in an effort to smooth out friction between advocates for pedestrians/bicyclists and environmental issues.

The Fairfax County Planning Commission on Wednesday night (March 18) reviewed the proposed changes and recommended approval of the new plan by the Board of Supervisors when the issue is addressed in May.

War in the Mideast is having an impact on passenger activity at Dulles International Airport.

About two-thirds of flights from Dulles to the broader Middle East region have been cancelled since the U.S. and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran on Feb. 28, Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) President and CEO Jack Potter told the authority’s board of directors on March 18.
