Record your trip using your favorite fitness tracking app to show us the route. Submit screenshots of the five routes to earn $10 on an eGift Card. Add more destinations to earn up to $100. Download the game board to keep track of where you’ve been and your progress towards the next reward.

Local theater triumphs: 1st Stage extends run of Kenneth Lonergan’s The Waverly Gallery

1st Stage, Tysons’ award-winning professional theatre, has announced the extension of its critically acclaimed production of Kenneth Lonergan’s The Waverly Gallery.

Due to overwhelming audience demand and rave reviews, the show, which was originally scheduled to close this weekend, will now run through October 13.

With its blend of humor, heartbreak, and raw authenticity, The Waverly Gallery is sure to continue touching hearts during its extended run. Set in New York City in the late 1980s, The Waverly Gallery tells the story of Gladys, the elderly matriarch of the Green family, who has run an art gallery in a small Greenwich Village hotel for many years. The management wants to replace her less-than-thriving gallery with a coffee shop. Always irascible but now increasingly erratic, Gladys becomes a cause for concern to her family.

Kenneth Lonergan, known for his sensitive portrayals of family and emotional complexity (Manchester by the Sea, This Is Our Youth), paints a nuanced picture of intergenerational relationships, care, and loss. The production reunites director Alex Levy and Lonergan for the first time since 1st Stage’s production of Lobby Here, which the Wall Street Journal declared the nation’s best regional production of 2016.

For 1st Stage, this production has resonated strongly with local audiences. Critics and theatergoers alike have praised the ensemble cast for delivering heartfelt performances, particularly highlighting the sensitive portrayal of Gladys by veteran DMV actress Catherine Flye.

Artistic Director Alex Levy expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community.

“The response to The Waverly Gallery has been extraordinary,” Levy said. “Kenneth Lonergan’s writing taps into universal truths about love, aging, and family. Our team has worked tirelessly to bring these themes to life on stage. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to share this story with even more people.”

The decision to extend the show underscores 1st Stage’s commitment to producing high quality, intimate works that speak to contemporary issues. Lonergan’s Pulitzer Prize-nominated play, which debuted on Broadway in 2018, remains particularly poignant today, as more families confront the challenges of caring for aging loved ones.

For those who have not yet seen the production, the added performances offer another chance to witness what has been called one of the finest local theater experiences of the season.

Legal Insider: Protecting veterans’ rights at the merit systems protection board under USERRA & VEOA

When someone performs uniformed military service, certain protections are granted when it comes to their seeking and performance of civilian federal employment. Two important sources of protection for veterans are the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) and Veterans Employment Opportunities Act (VEOA).

What is the USERRA?

USERRA is a federal law that protects military service members and veterans from employment discrimination on the basis of their service, allows them to regain their civilian jobs following a period of uniformed service, and ensures that they are not disadvantaged in their civilian careers because of their military service.

What is VEOA?

VEOA is a federal law that provides certain federal employees and applicants with a means of redress in the event that a federal executive agency violates the employee’s or applicant’s veterans’ preference rights. The Office of Personnel Management’s VetGuide provides a comprehensive list of campaigns and expeditions which qualify for veterans’ preference and insight on the types of veterans’ preference.

How to File an USERRA or VEOA Claim

A federal employee claiming a violation of USERRA may file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), who will investigate the complaint and attempt to resolve the issue. Federal employees who believe their USERRA rights have been violated by an agency may alternatively (and often preferred) file an appeal directly with the MSPB. While there is generally no statute of limitations on USERRA claims, it is important to file them as soon as possible because those filed more recently will generally be viewed more credibly.

Under VEOA, before an individual can file a VEOA appeal with the MSPB, she/he must first file a complaint with the Secretary of Labor. After filing a complaint with the Secretary of Labor, an individual can pursue the case at the MSPB once 60 days has passed without a decision or within 15 days of receiving written notification from the Secretary of Labor that the Secretary has been unable to resolve the complaint. Unlike with USERRA, there is a deadline for filing a VEOA complaint with the Secretary of Labor. A VEOA complaint must generally be filed with the Secretary of Labor within 60 days of the VEOA violation.

Remedies for USERRA or VEOA Violations

If successful in an MSPB case based on either USERRA or VEOA, the following types of remedies are often available:

Correction of any unlawful employment action taken or not taken (USERRA)
Ordering the Agency to comply with the statute or regulation that was violated (VEOA)
Repayment of any loss of wages or back-pay (both USERRA and VEOA)
The award to a federal employee of reasonable attorney’s fees, expert witness fees, and other litigation expenses (both USERRA and VEOA)
