Apartment rents across the D.C. region are high, but a new data analysis suggests they likely would have been even pricier had the COVID-19 pandemic not intervened.
August’s median regional rent across the D.C. region was about 2.5% below what it would have been had Covid not upended the rental market in the early 2020s, according to projections reported Sept. 24 by Apartment List.

A MacArthur Fellow, Guggenheim Fellow, and Forge Project Fellow, his work has been shown in major film festivals, museums, and international exhibitions and is in numerous prominent museum collections. Hopinka is currently an assistant professor in the department of Art, Film, and Visual Studies at Harvard University.

Youth Advocates Push Back on Increased Marijuana Penalties — “The maximum civil penalty for consuming or offering marijuana in public is set to rise from $25 to $250 on July 1, 2027, the same day retail sales are scheduled to begin. A second offense also carries a $250 fine and requires substance-use education or treatment, or both, if available, while a third or subsequent offense is a Class 4 misdemeanor.” [Virginia Mercury]

Kennedy Center Employees Claim Repairs Were Delayed — “In a letter to Congress, former staff members alleged Executive Director Matt Floca halted a funded plan to address roof issues in April. A Maryland man has been indicted for second-degree murder in the stabbing death of a woman in Annandale earlier this year.
Musa Kargbo, 43, is now scheduled to stand trial on Jan. 11 in Fairfax County Circuit Court. The Prince George’s County resident is accused of killing Isha Koroma, 26, of Alexandria, outside of the Annandale home where she worked taking care of a child, on Nov. 7, 2025.
