A fire that destroyed several units in the Vista of Annandale apartments over the weekend was electrical in origin, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department said yesterday (Tuesday).

Specifically, an “electrical event involving a surge protector” is what set an apartment building in the 7900 block of Charles Thomson Lane ablaze, the fire department says.

Fairfax County is getting ready to make significant and much needed repairs to George Mason Regional Library in Annandale.

Like the Crossroads rehab facility similarly receiving an upgrade, the library at 7001 Little River Turnpike hasn’t received a renovation since the 1990s. Built in 1960, the facility received an addition in 1998.

Fairfax County officials have outlined a long-term improvement plan for Gallows Road that they hope will support a more harmonious relationship between drivers and pedestrians.

Presented at community meetings on July 15 and 17, the “preferred alternatives” in the Gallows Road multimodal transportation study aim to modernize the corridor due to an increasing presence of active transportation — those who walk, jog and bike.

A 21-year-old man is facing the possibility of life in prison for fatally shooting a teen at the Fairmont Gardens Apartments in Annandale over an alleged gang rivalry.

Ezequiel Diaz-Mondragon was convicted yesterday (Thursday) by a Fairfax County jury of first-degree murder for killing 18-year-old Anthony “Tony” Benitez on Feb. 19, 2021, Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano’s office announced today.

A West Virginia man is no longer facing jail time after being accused of extorting a woman from Annandale over her citizenship status.

The Fairfax County Commonwealth Attorney’s Office decided last Wednesday (June 11) not to prosecute the 51-year-old man, according to court records, though no reason was explicitly provided.

An aquatics director for the Fairfax County Park Authority was arrested last week after police say he had sexual contact with a juvenile recreation center employee.

Officers were called to the Audrey Moore Rec Center (8100 Braddock Road) at Wakefield Park in Annandale at 10:49 a.m. on June 8 for a report of a sexual offense, the Fairfax County Police Department said in a press release.

A man has been charged with attempted abduction after police say he tried to lure a child who was waiting for a school bus.

Hugo Perez Soliz, 45, allegedly drove up to the child near Wadsworth Court and Little River Turnpike in yesterday (Tuesday) morning and “attempted to persuade the child” to get into his black Subaru sedan, the Fairfax County Police Department says.

The National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) approved grants this week for a suite of projects, including two in Fairfax County aimed at improving pedestrian and bicyclist safety.
