All but one of the Fairfax County Police Department’s major crime statistics dropped in 2025, according to police data released this week.

Rates of carjackings (down 48%), non-fatal shootings (37%), burglaries (27%), robberies (19%), shoplifting (11%), sex offenses (11%), vehicle theft (10%) and homicides (7%) all saw a year-over-year drop, Police Chief Kevin Davis told the Board of Supervisors’ Safety and Security Committee on Tuesday (March 10).

Fairfax County school leaders see signs of improving mental health, but also some ongoing red flags, in the county’s most recent youth survey.

“This is always a bittersweet report to read,” at-large Fairfax County School Board member Kyle McDaniel said after Superintendent Michelle Reid detailed the report’s findings at the board meeting last Thursday (Oct. 23).

A new initiative reporting crime data from across the D.C. region in “near-real time” has won praise from local leaders and will provide new tools for policymakers, public safety agencies and the public.

“It’s the only one we’re aware of in the nation,” said Eli Russ, a senior public safety planner for the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG), who serves as project manager for the effort.

Fairfax County leaders now have a new tool in addressing the flood-prone properties in the county.

The Board of Supervisors unanimously accepted a new report last Tuesday (May 13) updating and detailing the county’s list of “repetitive-loss areas” — properties that have seen two or more claims of over $1,000 in losses through the National Flood Insurance Program, or NFIP.

The number of pedestrians and cyclists killed in traffic crashes in Fairfax County have doubled this year, one study says.

A total of 19 pedestrians have died this year through November — a substantial increase from the 10 tallied in 2023, according to data compiled by the advocacy group Northern Virginia Families for Safe Streets (NOVA FSS). In addition, a bicyclist was killed on West Ox Road in October, the county’s first cyclist fatality since 2021.

Fairfax County’s unemployment rate saw little movement in year-over-year in new data, while those seeking to rent apartments across the county are likely to be paying more than they would have a year before.

The new figures represent employment conditions recorded in September and housing costs in October.

The Case Overview Dashboard breaks down the cases handled by local prosecutors based on demographic information, case types, charges and the overall volume.

Reston has seen a steady uptick in development over the past decade, fueled primarily by an influx of housing, new Fairfax County data shows.

The county recently updated its Reston Data Visualization Project — now called Reston Snapshots — with data collected from 2023 and the addition of a land use hub that provides an overview of the area’s progress toward fulfilling the Reston Comprehensive Plan’s vision of a more mixed-use, transit-oriented community.
