For the second straight year, the Lake Braddock Bruins are the champions of the 6C North Region football tournament.

Lake Braddock (11-2) won the 2024 eight-team high-school tourney Saturday (Nov. 30) on its home field with a 40-25 victory over the Fairfax Lions.

It will be the defending champion Lake Braddock Bruins hosting the Fairfax Lions tomorrow (Saturday) in the championship game of the 6C North Region high school football tournament.

The contest will begin at 1 p.m. at No. 2 seed Lake Braddock (10-2) in Burke. Fairfax High School (8-3), which won the 2022 regional champion title, is the third seed.

Three players from the state-runner-up Oakton Cougars girls field-hockey team were chosen to the Virginia High School League Class 6 all-state first team, as were three from Fairfax High School.

Oakton senior forward Avery DeKoven, junior midfielder Marisa Rubano and freshman defender Daniella Rubano were Oakton’s first-team selections.

By matching their most lopsided victory of the season, the Oakton Cougars won their opening match of the state field-hockey tournament.

Oakton (21-2) routed the visiting North Stafford Wolverines, 7-0, in that Virginia High School League Class 6 girls contest. The victory was the 13th in a row this season for a team that already has won Concorde District and 6D North Region tournaments this fall and is now 6-0 in the postseason.

With a strong back-nine finish, Robinson Rams’ golfer Erin Mullin finished second in the Girls State Open golf tournament

The junior shot a 1-under-par round of 69 at the Virginia High School League event on the Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg Monday (Oct. 28). She was two shots behind the winning seven-birdie round of 67 shot by Kathryn Ha from Salem High of Virginia Beach.

It was at age 4, after racing in a small go-kart for the first time, that Miles Murray discovered the passion that would drive his young life.

Now 17 and a senior at Fairfax High School, Murray races larger U.S. Legend Cars and recently won his biggest and most significant local championship yet at Dominion Raceway near Fredericksburg.

Dozens of star players were out for a recent girls high-school basketball event in Fairfax.

The 24th annual local College Showcase girls hoop competition was held the morning of Sept. 29 at Fairfax High for high-school-age players from Northern Virginia and surrounding jurisdictions. Some 67 players participated, displaying their skills in refereed games with running clocks and drills for college coaches, who were on hand to watch.

Three Fairfax County Public Schools teachers will now be able to pursue unique arts projects with their students, thanks to financial assistance from the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts.

A nonprofit that supports and programs Wolf Trap National Park, the foundation announced on Feb. 20 that it has awarded 13 grants from an annual program for D.C. area educators who teach music, dance or theater at public schools.

Fairfax County Public Schools won’t be back in session for the fall until Aug. 22, but Britepaths is getting a head start on helping students prepare for that day.

The Fairfax-based nonprofit is asking community members to donate money or backpacks for its annual Collect for Kids Back to School program, a month-long campaign that launched on July 1.
