Fairfax County’s real-estate-tax rate won’t increase this year, but homeowners facing average assessment increases of nearly 7 percent will have to fork out about $520 more unless county supervisors eventually agreed to cut the rate.

Fairfax County officials plan to purchase a property at 819 Swinks Mill Road in McLean, then demolish the home and impervious surfaces there and restore the natural floodplain.
It came as no surprise, but Fairfax County’s jobless rate joined the rest of Northern Virginia in ticking upward to start the year.
With 627,732 county residents counted in the civilian workforce and 17,591 looking for jobs, Fairfax’s unemployment rate of 2.7 percent in January was up from 2.5 a month before.

The Vienna Police Department is taking a proactive approach to combat the uptick in thefts of Hyundai and Kia vehicles across the United States, department officials said March 10.
A year ago right about this time, home-sellers across Fairfax County were hustling to get their properties on the market in anticipation – correctly, as it turned out – that things soon would be turning sour as interest rates rose and affordability issues priced out some would-be buyers.
So it’s perhaps no surprise that the 831 properties that came onto the Fairfax market this February represented a decline of 41 percent from the 1,410 homes coming to listing a year ago.
AAUW McLean Branch recognizes STEM essay contest winners: The McLean Area Branch of AAUW (American Association of University Women) on March 14 announced the winners of its 2023 STEM Essay Contest during the group’s potluck dinner at the McLean Community Center.
The contest was open to seventh- and eighth-grade students (both girls and boys) at nine local public and private schools. The group asked students to discover and publicize women, including those of color, who had made a difference in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields, but received little or no recognition for their contributions while they were alive.
