The Town of Herndon’s comprehensive plan for 2050 received a big funding boost from the U.S. Department of Transportation this week.

In a release on Monday (June 26), Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine announced the town received $720,000 in funding from the federal Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity grant program (RAISE).

Local police have released a composite sketch from a June 18 early morning shooting outside the Ashford Meadows Apartments in Herndon.

Officers discovered that a man had been shot at around 4 a.m. in the 2500 block of Cornelia Road. He was found shot multiple times in the upper body in the parking lot, police said.

Local police are investigating a spree of thefts from unlocked cars in Reston.

Police believe suspects have entered more than 30 unlocked cars and stolen valuables, like purses, credit cards, cash and electronics, between May and June. The suspects were captured on surveillance footage recently, the Fairfax County Police Department announced yesterday (Tuesday).

(Updated at 11:55 a.m. on 6/28/2023) CHIBOO Bakery, a new local gourmet French macaron business, is opening its first brick-and-mortar location this weekend in Herndon.

Chiboo will open on Friday (June 30) from 4-8 p.m. at 274 Sunset Park Drive and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday’s grand opening will feature “celebration specials, a lucky draw and a free macaron for the first 50 RSVPs,” according to the event page.

A new Indian restaurant is coming to Herndon’s Village Center at Dulles.

Mirch Dhamaka is expected to occupy a nearly 3,600-square-foot spot at 2443 Centreville Road, according to signage posted at the location.

Local residents are asking Reston Association to change the name of Shadowood pool once again.

The effort — which previously came up over a decade ago — is primarily underway in order to tackle the assumption that the pool is only for the use of the Shadowood Condominium Association instead of for all RA members.

A man who was shot in Herndon on Sunday (June 18) remains in critical condition, the Fairfax County Police Department says.

Police said the man was found with a gunshot wound to his upper body on Sunday morning in the 2500 block of Cornelia Road. That day, he was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Fairfax County will alight with joy and celebration with a variety of opportunities to celebrate Juneteenth this coming weekend (June 17-19).

Just last week on June 6, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors officially recognized Monday, June 19 of this year as Juneteenth. Only recently anointed a state and federal holiday, the occasion commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved men and women in Galveston, Texas finally heard the news that they had been freed two years prior under the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.

After sleepy population growth over the last decade, Herndon planners expect the town will see significant population growth in the coming 10 to 15 years.

In a June memo to the Town of Herndon’s planning commission, head of long-range planning Ahmad Zaki said the changes must inform the town’s planning decisions.
