The Langley High School girls basketball team won its second-ever region title and first since 2017 by defeating the Oakton Cougars Friday night (Feb. 28) in a championship game at Wakefield High School.

The Saxons (24-3) won the game and the 6D North Region title with a 54-37 victory. Oakton fell to 23-5 for the season, but both teams move on to the state tournament, which opens this week.

Fairfax County students again dominated the 2025 Virginia Aviation Art Contest.

Youth from McLean, Herndon and Chantilly swept first-place honors in all three age categories, the Virginia Department of Aviation announced on Feb. 19. A total of eight students from the local area will move on to national competition, with an opportunity to potentially compete internationally.

The students of McLean will take center stage in two new arts exhibitions set to open next month.

To celebrate Youth Art Month, which is typically held every March, the McLean Project for the Arts (MPA) is bringing back its annual youth art shows, which showcase work by students in elementary through high school in the McLean and Langley pyramids.


Sports

Counting swimmers, a diver and a relay team, there were four champions from local schools at the recent private school state meet in Stafford.

In swimming, juniors Kate Douglas from Potomac School and Elizabeth Bryan from Oakcrest School each won two races in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association girls’ competition, held at the Jeff Rouse Swim and Sport Center last Saturday (Feb. 15).

Clogged wastewater pipes will once again require a temporary shutdown of Scott’s Run Nature Preserve.

The park at 7400 Georgetown Pike is scheduled to close next Monday, Feb. 17 so a contractor’s crews can address a “critical blockage” stopping up the siphon system that carries wastewater from McLean, under the Potomac River and into Maryland, the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services announced yesterday (Wednesday).

Overall depth, including victories in two relays and three in individual races, and many more top-five finishes helped the Flint Hill Huskies win their second straight swimming and diving league championship.

The Oakton private school’s boys high school team won the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference private-school title on Saturday, Jan. 25 at Catholic University with 162.5 team points. The Huskies’ neighborhood rival Potomac School Panthers were second with 127.

An entertaining individual shootout occurred involving three top scoring leaders when neighborhood rivals met on Saturday, Jan. 25 in a girls’ high-school basketball game.

The Potomac School Panthers defeated the host Flint Hill Huskies, 73-53, for their second straight win in that Independent School League private-school clash. The loss snapped the Huskies’ four-game victory string, as Flint Hill stands 12-6.

If you’re thinking about taking the Capital Beltway near McLean this weekend, you might want to reconsider that plan.

Starting on the night of Friday, Jan. 24, four of the six northbound lanes on I-495 will be shut down for one mile from the Route 7 interchange (Leesburg Pike) in Tysons to Lewinsville Road in McLean to accommodate construction.

McLean residents looking to get their photos from the recent winter holidays framed might want to head to the Chesterbrook Shopping Center tomorrow (Saturday).

Starting at 10 a.m., Framebridge will open the doors of its newest custom framing store, located in the shopping center at 6234 Old Dominion Drive. To celebrate its grand opening, the business will give out archival prints of Great Falls Park that customers can get framed.

A gift from The Madeira School’s past will enable it to plan for the future, the head of the private, all-girls’ school in McLean says.

The Madeira School, a college preparatory and boarding school that serves students in grades 9 through 12, announced this week that an anonymous former graduate has donated $60 million — a record amount not only for this 118-year-old school, but for any independent girls’ school in the U.S.
