For residents of Bailey’s Crossroads, particularly the Culmore area, crossing the street is no small feat.

In some spots along Route 7, it means surviving six lanes of traffic traveling at 40 miles an hour without the refuge of a median or sidewalk, or walking two blocks to reach the nearest crosswalk. Limited street lighting creates an added danger at night.

(Updated at 3:40 p.m.) The community is starting to rally to support the families of two Oakton High School students who died after a car struck them on a sidewalk Tuesday (June 7).

A GoFundMe was created for one of the students, identified as Ada Gabriela. As of this morning (Thursday), the fundraiser had raised over $60,000 to help the family cover funeral expenses and other costs, surpassing its goal in less than a day. Another GoFundMe that went live Thursday has collected more than $13,000 for the other student who died.

Officials are proposing adding bicycle lanes and crosswalks to Farmington Drive and Fordson Road, which are in two highly trafficked areas south of the Beltway.

On Farmington Drive, the lanes and additional shared street markings would go between Telegraph Road and Edgehill Drive bordering Jefferson Manor Park and near the Huntington Metro.

Update at 5:35 p.m. — Two of the three teenage pedestrians that were struck in a crash in Oakton this morning have died from their injuries, Fairfax County Police said. The three pedestrians that were struck were Oakton High School students, police said.

An 18-year-old Alexandria woman died over the weekend from injuries sustained in a fatal hit and run in Lincolnia last month, the Fairfax County Police Department announced yesterday (Monday).

The driver of a 2007 Honda CRV struck Daniela Bonilla Betancourt when she was crossing Little River Turnpike in a crosswalk near Oasis Drive on May 22, police said. Officers responded to the crash around 10:23 p.m. and she was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Fairfax County has a new plan that will guide efforts to make streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and others.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors is slated to endorse a Safe Streets for All Program at its meeting today (Tuesday).

A 40-year-old Fairfax driver faces criminal charges for a vehicle crash that resulted in the death of a 58-year-old man who was using a crosswalk in Burke, police said yesterday (Sunday).

Rachel Isner was charged with careless driving and infliction of injury on a vulnerable road user. The crash happened at the intersection of Guinea Road and Olley Lane on April 20 when Lloyd Ingram, of Burke, was in the crosswalk and had the right of way, police said.

A 63-year-old Springfield man died Sunday (April 3) from injuries sustained after a car struck him while he was in a median, Fairfax County Police Department said today (Thursday).

An Annandale man was driving a 2020 Hyundai Elantra around 1 p.m. March 28 on Franconia Road West in Springfield when he ran a red light, entered an intersection, and struck a Ford F-150 that was traveling north on Loisdale Road, police said.

Reston Association is calling on state and local officials to push forward the redesign of a circuitous traffic island near Lake Anne Plaza.

At a meeting last night (Thursday), RA’s Board of Directors unanimously approved a letter asking the Virginia Department of Transportation, state officials, and county departments to consider fixing what directors dubbed “pork chop island.”

As part of the first comprehensive overhaul since 1988, Fairfax County officials are proposing a tiered system for parking requirements based on development density.

The effort, dubbed Parking Reimagined, kickstarted in response to changing patterns of behavior, technology demographics, and 34 years of development, particularly bus service and Metrorail.
