VHC Health promises new medical option, pedestrian upgrades with Graham Center overhaul

VHC Health and Intuitive Health are looking to redevelop Graham Center in West Falls Church with a combined emergency room and urgent care facility (via Fairfax County)

A joint emergency room and urgent care center that Virginia Hospital Center (VHC) says will be the first facility of its kind in Virginia took a step closer to becoming a reality last week.

The Fairfax County Planning Commission unanimously recommended approval on Wednesday, Sept. 18 of VHC Health’s proposal to redevelop Graham Center (7234 Arlington Blvd) in West Falls Church with a new medical facility — a project that county staff agreed will “significantly improve pedestrian safety” compared to the existing, aging shopping center.

Fairfax transportation planners seek public input on major trail and bicycle network overhaul

After two years of meticulous data collection and analysis, Fairfax County’s Department of Transportation (FCDOT) is moving into the second phase of its ActiveFairfax Transportation Plan.

Starting today (Tuesday) at 6 p.m. at the Graham Road Community Center in West Falls Church, FCDOT will host a series of in-person and virtual open houses throughout the fall to gather input from residents on enhancing the county’s extensive network of pedestrian trails and bicycle pathways.

Herndon advances traffic calming plan for Ferndale Avenue

The planned Ferndale Avenue traffic calming improvements include curb bump outs and a new crosswalk at Park Avenue (via Town of Herndon)

Eventually, Ferndale Avenue will get curb bump outs, additional crosswalks and marked parking lanes, changes intended to slow down traffic and protect pedestrians.

First, though, Town of Herndon staff are reviewing options for temporary, more immediate safety measures that can be implemented ahead of the long-term traffic calming project, which has no set funding or completion date yet.

Pedestrian improvements added at The Boro in Tysons

Pedestrians can now cross Westpark Drive to get to and from The Boro without having to walk over to the Greensboro Drive or Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) intersections.

A new High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) pedestrian beacon was installed at Boro Place, just outside Whole Foods, in June, one of a handful of accessibility improvements that The Boro’s developer promised to deliver with its expansion of the Tysons neighborhood.

Wiehle Avenue pedestrian bridge opens to W&OD Trail users — for real this time

Let’s try this again: The long-anticipated pedestrian bridge over Wiehle Avenue in Reston is now officially open to Washington & Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail users.

Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn had previously announced that the 147-foot-long, 16-foot-wide bridge would open on July 9, but the launch got delayed due to pending final inspections.

Reston Town Center bridge work to temporarily close W&OD Trail

The Washington & Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail will be momentarily off limits near Reston Town Center, as construction continues on a new pedestrian bridge.

The trail will be closed from Friday, July 26 through Sunday, July 28 while workers install the bridge, which will cross over the trail to connect the existing town center with the Reston Next development emerging around the Metro station.

Washington & Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail users will have to wait a little longer before they can cross Wiehle Avenue in Reston without having to brave vehicular traffic.

A bridge over the busy roadway was slated to open to pedestrians, bicyclists and other travelers on Tuesday, July 9, Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn announced on July 3.

Herndon seeks funding to improve Sunset Business Park access

The Town of Herndon is angling to obtain funds for a project it hopes will make Sunset Business Park easier and safer to visit, even as construction continues on a different side of the commercial complex.

The Herndon Town Council authorized staff on Tuesday (June 4) to apply for up to $6 million in federal funds for access and safety improvements at the Herndon Parkway and Sunset Park Drive intersection.

Future Wiehle Avenue could have fewer lanes, more pedestrian and bicycle facilities

The Wiehle Avenue of the future will be less auto-centric and more accommodating to pedestrians, bicyclists and other non-motorized travelers — or so Fairfax County hopes.

Reston residents got a glimpse into possible versions of that future at a community meeting on May 23, when the Fairfax County Department of Transportation shared three concepts for new roadway configurations with multimodal facilities, landscaping and other changes.

Fairfax County board greenlights shared-use path construction on Shreve Road

Fairfax County leaders have given the go-ahead for a new shared-use path and planting strip along Shreve Road at the Falls Church border.

On Tuesday (May 7), the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a resolution authorizing the Fairfax County Department of Transportation to begin the project’s design, land acquisition, and construction that will extend from the Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail to Route 7 in Idylwood.
