A man held in custody at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center died last weekend.

John Boos, 37, was found “unresponsive” in his cell by a sheriff’s deputy Saturday night (Sept. 21), prompting the deputy to call a medical emergency, the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) announced on Monday (Sept. 23).

Two men have been sentenced to prison in connection with a 2023 armed robbery of a check-cashing business in Chantilly.

Al Gibran Taylor, 42, of Reston and Antonio Chester Lewis, 39, of Oxon Hill were sentenced by a federal judge after pleading guilty to gun-related charges earlier this summer, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia said in a press release.

Arlington-based Local News Now acquired the newspaper’s assets, including its archives, from Arizona-based O’Rourke Media Group, which operates 50 local publications in more than three dozen markets across the U.S.

A former sergeant with the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) has been charged with assaulting a man during an arrest earlier this month.

Joshua Silver was arrested yesterday (Tuesday) and charged with assault and battery after appearing to punch the man in the head multiple times when he was brought to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center on Sept. 11, according to in-car video shared by the sheriff’s office.

Task Force Activated for Tropical Storm Response — “VA-TF1 has been activated by @fema as an 80-person, 4-canine Type 1 US&R team for TC Helene.” The task force prepared “over 30 tons of equipment, including tents, boats, and rescue equipment,” before leaving Chantilly yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon for Florida. Langley Student Hit by Car on Way to School — McLean resident Nadia Leonova recalls the morning of Aug. 21, when her son “was struck by a car as he was trying to cross Georgetown Pike near Pine Hill Road. There is no crosswalk at the intersection. In fact, there are no crosswalks between the street on which the Langley freshman lives and his school.” [Patch]

GW Parkway Views to Be Restored — “Drivers on the George Washington Memorial Parkway may soon have clearer views of the Potomac, but they should also expect weekend lane closures during restoration work. The National Park Service announced…that crews will ‘rehabilitate’ 15 scenic vistas between the North Donaldson Overlook and Spout Run Parkway.” [ARLnow]

Metro to Bring Back Self-Driving Trains — “Metro’s Red Line trains will drive themselves starting in December, and the self-driving trains will be used across the rail system by spring 2025…The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority used to use automation to operate trains, but pulled the system after the 2009 Red Line crash at Fort Totten that killed nine riders.” [WTOP]

Annandale Road Diet Gets Support — Fairfax County transportation staff detailed their proposal for a road diet on Annandale Road “between Little River Turnpike and Gallows Road at virtual community meeting on Sept. 23…The seven people who commented on the proposal at the meeting all said they supported it. Fairfax City Offers Grants to Nonprofits — “The City of Fairfax has established a grant program to help support nonprofit human services organizations that serve city residents…Applications will be accepted from Sept. 23 through 4 p.m Nov. 4. The FBI on Tuesday raided the Reston office of Carahsoft, an IT services and software government contractor with about 2,000 employees.

The FBI confirmed “court-authorized law enforcement activity on Sunset Hills Road this morning.” The bureau declined further comment.

Space in Herndon’s Woodland Park neighborhood that was previously approved for office uses could flip instead into a mostly residential building.

The Texas-based developer Trammell Crow Residential has purchased the contract for a little over three acres of vacant land at the intersection of the Dulles Airport Access Road and Monroe Street so it can construct an apartment building with 320 units and nearly 118,000 square feet of storage space.

The Washington West Film Festival will be cooking with Kevin Bacon when it returns to Fairfax County next month for its 13th year.

The “Footloose” star is set to visit the county both virtually and in-person as part of the philanthropic festival, which announced a varied lineup of movies this week that will screen from Oct. 10-13 at Look Dine-In Cinemas in Reston (11940 Market Street) and Tysons (1667 Silver Hill Drive).

A pair of office buildings built in Herndon’s McNair area at the turn of the millennium may soon be replaced with hundreds of homes.

The developer Mandrake Capital Partners is seeking to build 240 townhomes and 18 multifamily units on roughly 12 acres of land at the southwestern corner of the Dulles Technology Drive and Sunrise Valley Driver intersection, according to an application submitted to Fairfax County on Sept. 13.
