For any drivers who’ve endured bumper-to-bumper traffic on Chain Bridge Road or pedestrians wishing they could walk from Oakton Shopping Center to the Oakton Library without risking life and limb, an opportunity has arrived to contribute to a potential solution.

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) is inviting members of the public to share their ideas for addressing traffic congestion and safety issues in Oakton at a community workshop that will be held tonight (Thursday) at 6:30 p.m. at Oakton High School (2900 Sutton Road).

Work began on Monday (Aug. 25) to overhaul a currently awkward intersection along Route 50 (Fairfax Blvd) in Fairfax City.

While construction may cause some disruptions, the resulting reconfiguration of the area where Fairfax Blvd, Warwick Avenue and McLean Avenue meet should make travel smoother and safer in the future, according to the city.

Construction crews are scheduled to begin work this week on an extension of the northbound I-495 (Capital Beltway Inner Loop) ramp to southbound George Washington Memorial Parkway (GW Parkway), requiring the highway to be narrowed.

A person was killed in a multi-vehicle crash on the Capital Beltway (I-495) near North Springfield Elementary School during the afternoon rush hour today (Monday).

The crash involving a Toyota Tacoma truck, a Scion XB hatchback, a Honda Civic, a Ford F350 and a Nissan Rogue occurred around 3:08 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-495 near Braddock Road in north Springfield, according to the Virginia State Police.

Since mid-June, contractor Sagres Construction has been working to replace the brick crosswalks and curb ramps at the commercial thoroughfare’s intersections with East Street and Lawyers Road.

Police and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units were dispatched to a section of the Capital Beltway north of Route 7 and south of Route 123 around 9:20 a.m. for a crash that reportedly involved a tractor-trailer, another truck and two sedans.

A person was shot this morning (Thursday) at the CIA’s headquarters in McLean.

Patrol officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Dolley Madison Blvd shortly before 4 a.m. to assist CIA Police with managing traffic after a “non-fatal shooting” on the intelligence agency’s property, the Fairfax County Police Department says.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors around midnight on Tuesday (May 13) voted 9-0 to move forward with a plan for affordable housing on the soon-to-be-vacated Franconia Governmental Center site.

The vote — unanimous except for absent Springfield District Superivsor Pat Herrity — came after hours of public testimony for and against the proposal to amend the county’s Comprehensive Plan related to the 22.75-acre site known as the Franconia Triangle.

Fairfax County leaders believe they and other Northern Virginia leaders are getting an unfair deal when it comes to state transportation funding.

The Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday (May 13) to send a letter to Virginia Secretary of Transportation Sheppard Miller III, expressing concern about being passed over in the latest round of “Smart Scale” funding for transportation improvements.
