Fairfax County leaders want Gov. Glenn Youngkin to boost state funding for critical services, such as schools, transportation and health care.

The Board of Supervisors voted 9-1 on Tuesday (Sept. 24) to send a letter to Youngkin arguing that chronic underfunding by the state has forced localities like Fairfax County to lean heavily on local tax revenue to maintain “core services” like public education, public safety and transportation infrastructure, straining local budgets and taxpayers.

Assault Reported at Fairfax City Motel — “A 22-year-old Falls Church man is facing multiple charges including abduction and assault and battery, in connection with an incident that occurred Sept. 16 at a Fairfax City motel…No injuries were reported.” [Patch]

Chipotle Sets Opening Date in Woodlawn — “Chipotle Mexican Grill will officially open for business Monday, Sept. 30 at its new Sacramento Center location in Woodlawn. The restaurant, located in the standalone building at the front of the shopping center, will be Chipotle’s second location along the Richmond Highway Corridor.” [On the MoVe]

Annandale Art Project Comes Together — “Local residents explored concepts of ‘home’ by collaborating on a house sculpture during the Taste of Annandale on Sept. 21. Proposed Vienna House Gets OK — “A proposal to consolidate two adjacent parcels to allow for construction of one large single-family home at 841 Ninovan Road, S.E., received the Vienna Town Council’s approval Sept. 23.” The town approved two homes in 2022 after the original single-family house on the lot was demolished, but new plans were submitted this year for just one home. Reston Food Pantry Fundraiser Returns — “This weekend, South Lakes High School’s PTSA Pantry is hosting its seventh annual Do It Your Way 0.5K, which is the group’s only annual fundraiser. More than 80% of people surveyed in the National Capital Region said they “support more and better transit services, even if it requires higher investment by the region,” according to a survey conducted by two advisory groups associated with a regional task group’s effort to create a new funding plan for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro).

Under a proposed funding plan known as Scenario 1, the advisory groups said the region would have to generate an additional $645 million to cover all the transit agencies in fiscal year 2028, with 70% of the funds for capital investments.

A campaign to bring an arts center to downtown McLean will get a sizable contribution from Fairfax County.

The county’s Board of Supervisors voted 9-0 yesterday (Tuesday) to invest $500,000 from its Economic Opportunity Reserve (EOR) in the future arts and education center proposed by the nonprofit McLean Project for the Arts (MPA).

A man held in custody at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center died last weekend.

John Boos, 37, was found “unresponsive” in his cell by a sheriff’s deputy Saturday night (Sept. 21), prompting the deputy to call a medical emergency, the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) announced on Monday (Sept. 23).

A former sergeant with the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) has been charged with assaulting a man during an arrest earlier this month.

Joshua Silver was arrested yesterday (Tuesday) and charged with assault and battery after appearing to punch the man in the head multiple times when he was brought to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center on Sept. 11, according to in-car video shared by the sheriff’s office.
