More than 4,000 properties in Fairfax City lost electricity in a power outage that affected local traffic signals as well as residents and businesses.
The City of Fairfax Police Department announced at 5:40 p.m. that all traffic signs and signals have now been restored to “normal operations,” though power outages are still affecting homes and businesses.
The department received reports this afternoon that “numerous traffic lights up and down Fairfax Blvd are not working or not working properly.”
“If you come across a traffic light that is out please use extreme caution and treat the intersection as a 4 way stop,” the police department said on social media.
A tree that fell on equipment caused 4,431 outages in Fairfax, Dominion Energy spokesperson Peggy Fox said. The utility’s outage map indicated that the outages were centered around the downtown area along Fairfax Blvd and Main Street.
“The damage was repaired, and all customers had their power back by 7 p.m.,” Fox told FFXnow.
The outage map is still showing outages– that is because we have a glitch in our server which we are addressing now.
The outages weren’t directly related to the weather, but the National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for much of the D.C. area got canceled shortly before 6:30 p.m. Stormy weather is expected tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon and evening.
“A few storms may be severe with damaging wind gusts and large hail,” the NWS said. “Daily thunderstorm chances are forecast through the upcoming holiday weekend. A few storms may be severe during the afternoon and evening hours, particularly Saturday and Monday.”
