Madison slotback chosen state’s top football player on offense

Dominic Knicely has received the highest honor for his performance on the football field for the Madison Warhawks during the fall season.

The senior slot back and kick returner has been named the Virginia High School League Class 6 state Offensive Player of the Year.

Knicely helped Madison win Concorde District and 6D North Region championships, finish a close second in the state tournament and compile a 14-1 overall record. The 14 victories were the Warhawks’ most ever in a single season.

Knicely also made first-team Class 6 on offense for the second straight year.

This past season, the 6-foot, 185-pound speedy Knicely rushed for 1,396 yards and 20 rushing touchdowns. He caught 46 passes for 1,039 yards and 15 TDs, and added 331 yards in kick returns and three scores.

Knicely completed his career with 3,194 yards rushing, 1,370 yards receiving and 1,345 in kick returns.

In five playoff games for Madison this season, Knicely rushed for 513 yards and seven touchdowns, caught 19 passes for 383 yards and seven TDs and returned kicks for 150 yards and a score.

In the state final, Knicely caught six passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns, and he ran for 86 yards and a score.

In addition to being named the state’s Offensive Player of the Year, Knicely received that same honor in the district and region this past season.

Knicely said he is planning to play in college at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C.
