Fairfax County Public Schools will clear school grounds early tonight (Wednesday) and start classes late tomorrow (Thursday) in anticipation of some wintry weather.
FCPS announced that all activities on school grounds, including sports practices and extracurricular activities, must wrap up by 9 p.m. In addition, schools will start on a two-hour delay tomorrow with a mix of snow and sleet expected to freeze overnight.
A Winter Weather Advisory for the D.C. region is scheduled to take effect at 9 p.m. today and continue until 10 a.m. tomorrow. Up to 1 inch of snow and sleet accumulations are possible, along with ice accumulations that could range from “a glaze” to one-tenth of an inch, according to the National Weather Service.
“Light sleet moves into the area this evening, then a mix of freezing rain and sleet develops after midnight,” the advisory said. “Most of the area will see a mix of sleet and freezing rain through the night, with rain mixing in along and east of Interstate 95. Temperatures will warm Thursday morning after sunrise, and precipitation transitions to rain.”
The Virginia Department of Transportation began treating bridges, ramps and overpasses yesterday (Tuesday) and will mobilize tonight to treat any wintry road conditions. The department is advising residents to limit travel tonight and delay any trips tomorrow morning.
“If you must go out, make sure your vehicle is equipped with emergency supplies and give space to first responders and VDOT crews while they are out treating area roads,” VDOT said.
Fairfax County government offices will open on time tomorrow, but employees have been granted unscheduled leave.
“Teleworkers are expected to telework or use personal leave,” the county said. “Emergency service personnel should report as scheduled.”
