Reston’s Barton Hill tennis courts bounce back with reopening party next month

After a year-long closure, the Barton Hill tennis courts (1901 Barton Hill) are making a return.

The courts closed at the end of June 2024 for a $851,000 renovation project, which featured a new asphalt surface, nets, fencing and color.

While the courts reopened for use in June when the major upgrades were completed, Reston Association will officially unveil the new look at a reopening celebration on Saturday, Sept. 13 from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The event is free and open to the public.

According to a release:

The celebration will feature a variety of activities for tennis players and spectators of all ages and skill levels. A demo court with a ball machine will be open for attendees to test out the resurfaced courts. Pfifer Fitness will offer high-energy cardio tennis sessions, and there will be raffles, giveaways and other prize opportunities throughout the morning. Additionally, RA staff will solicit community feedback related to pedestrian improvements on Barton Hill Road adjacent to the courts.

The four tennis courts at 1901 Barton Hill Road were built in 1985 and previously underwent repairs in 2011 and 2017.

“This project reflects Reston Association’s ongoing commitment to maintaining high-quality recreational facilities for our members,” RA Director of Recreation Laura Kowalski said. “We are excited to officially celebrate the reopening with the community.”

RA will next turn its attention to the tennis courts at Lake Newport. After gathering community feedback on potential improvements this spring, the association has funding to begin renovating the facilities in 2026 or 2027.
