Woman who crashed into CIA HQ gate convicted of DUI, reckless driving

The woman who crashed into the main gate at the CIA’s McLean headquarters while driving drunk earlier this year has been found guilty of three charges.

A federal jury on Thursday (Oct. 2) convicted 27-year-old Monia Spadaro of driving under the influence, reckless driving and eluding police in connection with the May 22 incident, according to online court records.

While behind the wheel a gray Toyota Corolla sedan, Spadaro was seen driving the wrong way at a high rate of speed toward the facility around 3:38 a.m. that morning, federal prosecutors said.

Spadaro continued toward the facility after a CIA police officer began pursuing her vehicle, leading an official stationed at the installation’s main gate to fire his weapon at her vehicle. She was shot four times.

Moments later, Spadaro’s vehicle struck one of the barriers at the main gate of the facility, bringing an end to the short-lived chase.

After being detained, Spadaro told police that she had been drinking at a restaurant in Tysons prior to the incident. Her blood alcohol concentration was observed at .237, according to court documents — nearly three times the legal limit of .08.

Spadaro is scheduled to be sentenced in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia on Jan. 22. She could face a few years behind bars, as well as the loss of her license.

The May 22 incident is not Spadaro’s only brush with the law for drunk driving. In 2021, she pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated in Arlington General District Court and received a suspended 180-day sentence.
