Update — CVS announced on Thursday, March 12 that it has decided not to close its store at Reston Station in April after all after reevaluating its upcoming plans.
Earlier: Commuters entering and exiting the Wiehle Metro station in Reston will soon no longer be greeted by CVS Pharmacy.
Signs posted to the drug store’s doors at 1906 Reston Metro Plaza, Suite 100, late last week informed customers that it will permanently close on April 14, pointing to the CVS in the South Lakes Village Shopping Center as a nearby alternative.
All prescriptions currently shipped to the Reston Station store will be transferred to the one at 11160 South Lakes Drive “to ensure patients have uninterrupted access to pharmacy care,” CVS said in a statement provided to FFXnow.
“Patients can always choose to fill their prescriptions at any CVS Pharmacy, or the pharmacy of their choice, if another is more convenient,” the company said. “Employees will be offered comparable roles within the company, if possible.”
CVS opened its 8,451-square-foot store at Reston Station almost exactly six years ago in March 2020, when construction was still underway on the office tower where it’s located.
The reader who alerted FFXnow to the impending closure noted that the store’s convenience made it “a good option for commuters and residents” living in Comstock Companies’ growing mixed-use development.
Comstock, which also saw Matchbox depart the Metro plaza at the end of last year, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
As part of a nationwide overhaul of its business strategy, CVS has shuttered more than 1,100 stores since 2022, including ones in Fairfax City and Vienna. The chain says the “difficult” decision to close its Reston Station location was informed by a number of factors, including “local market dynamics, population shifts [and] a community’s store density.”
“Maintaining access to pharmacy services in the communities we serve is an important factor we consider when making store closure decisions,” CVS said.
In addition to the South Lakes Village store, CVS will still have three other locations in Reston. It can be found in Reston Town Center, Plaza America and the Target shopping center at 12197 Sunset Hills Road.
“We also offer several delivery options for customers and patients with eligible prescriptions, including 1-2-day delivery and on-demand (same-day) delivery (within three hours), through CVS.com and the CVS Health app to provide additional convenient access to household essentials, health and wellness products, and prescription medications,” the company said in its emailed statement.
While CVS’ closure will leave another major vacancy at the original Reston Station, the development’s Reston Row expansion is starting to come together, with Noku Sushi joining Tous les Jours and Vida Fitness as retail tenants and the new Ebbitt House on its way.
Comstock has also secured some major leases for its two new office buildings there, including with consultants Booz Allen Hamilton and Amentum and the venture capital firm Razor’s Edge Ventures.
